• Notes

  The entries for the bride’s father’s name and occupation are blank (a dash has been inserted) on Annie and James’ parish marriage register entry. Whilst usually this indicates that the bride was illegitimate, in this case it could simply be because her father was deceased at the time of the marriage. A newspaper marriage notice (Grantham Journal, published 16 March 1901) also fails to provide Annie’s parents names. As this is the only Anne (or Annie) Furmidge of the correct age and location, it is assumed that the marriage is of Anne, daughter of John and Sarah Jane Furmidge. The 1939 Register entry for Annie Ward, born 01 May 1877 and living at 67, Ilkeston Road, Stapleford, next door to (her brother) James W Furmidge appears to confirm this conclusion (Class: RG101, Piece: 6206F).
