  • Notes
    • The burial register entry for Mabel Ethel Jenkins records that a coroner’s inquest was performed, the details of which are reported by a number of newspapers including the Mansfield Reporter (published 19th January 1883). Mabel Ethel Jenkins was 8 weeks old when she died, her mother Elizabeth Ann had been feeding her principally on bread and milk. On the day of her death, Mabel was fed in the morning and then placed in her bed but shortly after was found dead. Both the mother and a neighbour reported that the child had appeared in good health. The results of a post mortem revealed that the child was fairly well nourished and had no marks of violence on her however there was undigested thick bread and milk in her stomach. The surgeon believed that Mabel died from convulsions, caused by having improper food.
