  Alexander Huitt enlisted in the Militia at Attleborough, Norfolk on 28 July 1888. His birth place has been erroneously recorded as Attleborough, Norfolk; this is where he was living at the time; later records record his birth place as London. His civilian occupation is recorded as baker. He was based in Kinghorn, Scotland in the first half of the 1890’s where he and Caroline had four of their children. He served in South Africa from 31 March 1900 to 06 November 1901 and in Bermuda from the 07 November 1901 to 30 November 1902. He was mentioned in despatches for gallant conduct in the field and awarded a number of medals for his services in South Africa. He was also awarded the Silver Medal for “Long Service and Good Conduct”. He was discharged at Hull, Yorkshire on 21 September 1909 with the rank of Company Sergeant Major of the Royal Garrison Artillery. He appears to have signed up again on 23 August 1915 to 24 May 1919 but there are no overseas actions noted in his record for this period (The National Archives: WO 96 / 1411 / 13 & WO 364).
