1939 Register (RG101-2630I) records George’s year of birth as 1914 (25 Sep) however the GRO Birth Index registration is for Oct-Dec 1913. His Royal Engineers Tracer Card supports a date of birth of 25 Sep 1913. FURMEDGE, George Charles (I174)

A baptism or parish marriage register entry was not found for Joseph Furmedge however his marriage to Margaret Livingstone is recorded in her baptism register entry.

The GRO Death Index and burial record for Joseph Furmedge state that he was 30 years old when he died which would give an approximate year of birth of 1916, rather than 1914 (confirmed by his birth certificate). The burial record indicates that Joseph was living at 1, Springfield Place, Liverpool. Margaret Furmedge, also aged 30 years, is buried a few days later in the same cemetery and grave and previously of the same address. In the 1939 Register, Margaret Livingstone (married name: Furmedge) is living with her family at 1, Springfield Place, Liverpool.
FURMEDGE, Joseph (I248)

A fourth child, Mary Ann Furmidge, is recorded in the 1851 England census, aged 2 years old and possibly therefore a twin of Samuel, however this child appears in no other record found to date (Redmile, Leicestershire: Class: HO107, Piece: 2102, Folio: 349, Page: 6). FURMIDGE, Robert (I697)

A note has been added to Thomas’ burial record: “This child died of burns from fire [lighters] in the fields whilst he was employed scaring birds.” An inquest was held and reported in the Leicester Journal published 16th April 1858: Thomas had been employed as a bird scarer by R. Birch. He had been with his brother John and they had made a fire to “warm themselves and get their dinner by”. They thought that they had put the fire out but then Thomas sat down in the embers, and when the brothers left and were walking across the field, he realised that his clothes had caught fire. His cry brought Mr Birch into the field and both he and John had tried to put the fire out. A surgeon was called and attended Thomas at his home but he died in the night. A verdict of accidental death was given. FURMIDGE, Thomas (I488)

A teacher by occupation, John Roscoe enlisted in the Royal Signals as a Private on 30th October 1941. He transferred to the Intelligence Corps in November 1942 and was employed at GHQ for several months in charge of the wartime education for the 1500 “other ranks” of the Unit. From January 1943 to April 1946 he served in India. He was discharged from the army on 12th July 1946 with the rank of Sergeant. (Source: Service Records of J. Roscoe, No.: 2377604, The National Archives Reference: WO 421/10540, accessed on www.ancestry.co.uk). ROSCOE, John (I563)

According to his burial record, James died aged 2 days. The date of death has been inferred based on this information. FURMEDGE, James (I35)

Ada’s year of birth recorded on the GRO Death Index is 1895 however other sources including the 1939 Register and her burial record suggest that she was born in 1897. In addition her date of burial in the parish register has been over-written to correct it - the entry could be read as 11th July 1972. HILL, Ada Maria Kate (I672)

Albert Furmidge died aged 19 years old at Nottingham General Hospital as a result of complications from appendicitis. He had attended Stapleford Boys’ School and been a member of the Stapleford Group of Sea Scouts. At the time of his death he was employed by Messrs. Jones, Stroud, Ltd., Long Eaton. His funeral took place on Tuesday 6th October 1936 at Stapleford Cemetery. (Source: The Long Eaton Advertiser published 9th October 1936). FURMIDGE, Albert (I471)

Alfred Evans re-married Barbara Allen Bell Stoddart in 1905. EVANS, Alfred (I715)

Alfred Warman Edwards was a teacher. “He was head of the Harby C.E. School for many years, as well as being churchwarden, clerk to the parish council and the “Grantham Journal” correspondent.” (Grantham Journal published 01 March 1963, “Death in Kent of Mrs G. Edwards”). EDWARDS, Alfred Warman (I583)

Alfred’s year of birth is recorded as 1911 in the 1939 Register however his birth was registered in the April-June quarter of 1910 and his entry in the GRO Death Index records confirms his date of birth as 03 May 1910. WARING, Alfred (I627)

Alice Furmedge died “a few hours old” due to a premature birth. FURMEDGE, Alice (I33)

Alice Furmidge was a registered nurse having trained at the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary between 1942 and 1945; she was registered as a nurse on 7th June 1945 (Register of Nurses, Royal College of Nursing, General Nursing Council for England & Wales, London, 1946, Entry for Alice Furmidge of Police House, Walton-on-Trent, Burton-on-Trent). The 1952 Electoral Register for Cheltenham, Gloucestershire shows her resident at “Dudley”, Pilford Avenue, Cheltenham. FURMIDGE, Alice (I479)

Alice L Furmedge’s death certificate has a number of discrepancies: her father’s name is given as George William Furmedge and her age (71 years) is slightly older than expected based on her date of birth. Other details given that match known information are: the informant is her brother F. G. Furmedge, living at 8, Grafton Street, Landport, Portsmouth and her address at time of death is 5, Rosetta Road (the address at which her sister Florence Kate Saunders is living in the 1939 Register). At the time of death Alice is a spinster of no occupation. FURMEDGE, Alice Louisa (I118)

Alice, together with her three nieces (Alice Elise, Florence Mary & Josephine Rosalie Furmedge) emigrated to Canada in 1914 arriving by ship at Quebec before settling in Edmonton, British Columbia. FURMEDGE, Alice Rosaline (I98)

Alice’s date of birth is recorded in her baptism record and the 1939 Register as 18 January 1905, however in the GRO Death Index it is recorded as 24 January 1905. BUTTERWORTH, Alice (I255)

Alice’s death is reported in the Melton Mowbray Times published 10th August 1888, however the article implies that her death occurred 7th August whilst the parish register records her burial as 9th July. Whilst a death date of 7th July has been assumed, it is possible that the date of her burial is incorrectly recorded instead (the burials in the parish register on either side of the entry for Alice are in June and late August).

Alice was the daughter of Jonathan Oliff, who was the schoolmaster at Harby (1881 England Census: Class: RG11, Piece: 3184, Folio: 94, Page: 7). The family originated from Kent.

Although Edward and Elizabeth Ann were not married, Felicia’s surname has been registered as Furmidge in the GRO Birth Index. Her entry in the baptism register records her as the daughter of Edward and Elizabeth Ann Furmidge. FURMIDGE, Felicia Elsie (I553)

Although his name is recorded as Chrisostomes Elisavites in the marriage record transcript, his wife’s parents’ obituaries indicate that she was known as Mrs Nickles. This name change is supported by his wife’s grave memorial: “Elizabeth Annie Nickles Nee Furmedge 5.8.1900 - 29.6.1970 Wife of Christopher Nickles” and also his own memorial: “Christopher Nickles… Born as Chrisostomos Elisavites in Kokkari, Samos, Greece … Husband of Elizabeth Annie Furmedge…”. ELISAVITES, Chrisostomes (I403)

Although John Edward married in 1937, he is recorded as single in his World War Two service record enrolment form, dated 1942, giving his mother’s name and address as his next of kin. The Newcastle Journal (published 07 November 1942, Page: 3) records that he was awarded a decree nisi on grounds of his wife’s adultery with Albert Stoker (whom she married in 1949). FURMIDGE, John Edward (I741)

Although she was registered as Betty Furmedge in the GRO Birth Index, all other sources noted record her given names as Wendy Elizabeth. FURMEDGE, Betty (I12)

Although William was recorded as “Willie” in the GRO Birth Index, his parish baptism register entry and the England census record his name as “William”. FURMIDGE, William (I528)

An entry for Joseph in the GRO Birth Index has not been identified; his surname is recorded as Firmage in his baptism record. His mother’s maiden-name is recorded as Crummy. FURMEDGE, Joseph (I235)

An entry in the GRO Birth Index has not been found for John Furmidge (or common variant surnames). FURMIDGE, John (I904)

An entry in the GRO Birth Index has not been identified for Bernard Furmedge (or similar variants). His date of birth is recorded in his baptism record.

He joined the merchant navy in about 1923 and was engaged on several ships in-between 1924 and 1926. His card shows that he had been inactive for at least 5 years prior to 1932 (Register of Seamen, BT 349 / CR1 & BT 348 / CR2, The National Archives; accessed on www.findmypast.co.uk). He also appears on New York City Passenger Lists for 1924 (transcripts accessed on www.findmypast.co.uk): although he is recorded as a passenger (the lists also include crew), some of the ship’s names tally with those recorded on his merchant navy card. Except for one passenger list, the departure port is given as Hamburg (the exception is Greenock), travelling to New York via e.g., Southampton, Cherbourg, Quebec/Bermuda/Halifax. Only the year (1924) is recorded on these transcripts, not the exact dates and there appears to be some duplicatory transcripts (New York City Passenger Lists, 1820-1957: Reference: NARA: M237 & T715).

No death record has been identified for Bernard however his father’s obituary notice in the Liverpool Echo names his living children and Bernard is not listed. It has therefore been assumed that he died prior to 1951.
FURMEDGE, Bernard (I221)

Andrew was a widower at the time of his marriage to Ida Furmidge. He was living in Stathern in the early 1920’s and moved, with Ida, to Eaton in the late 1920s. He died at Markfield Hospital, age 73 years, just nine months after his retirement from the Eastwell Iron Ore Company. He was a veteran of the First World War and a member of the British Legion (Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published 11 April 1958). PORTER, Andrew (I671)

Ann Eliza’s age varies on different sources. For example she is recorded as 22 years old on her marriage in 1872 but as 48 years old at the time of her death in 1894. The England census returns following her marriage (1881 & 1891) do not add any clarity. A review of baptism records for St Augustine’s, Liverpool provide some evidence that she was born in either 1852 or 1854 (assuming the correct child has been identified). CRUMMEY, Annie Eliza (I233)

Ann Eliza’s mother’s maiden name has been transcribed as Crombie in the GRO Birth Index but is written as Crummey in the baptism register. Ann Eliza is recorded as Ann Elizabeth [Latin: Anna Elizabetha] in her baptism record, as Eliza Ann Furmidge in the GRO Death Index and as Eliza Ann Furmedge in her burial record. She died aged 14 weeks. FURMEDGE, Ann Eliza (I443)

Ann was 13 days old when she died. FURMIDGE, Ann (I666)

Anna’s surname in the baptism register appears as Furmidge. Her surname is recorded as Furmidge in the GRO Marriage Index but as Furmadge in the transcript of the entry in the parish marriage register. Benjamin Oliver Wallis was a widower at the time of their marriage. FURMEDGE, Anna Maria (I327)

Anna’s surname is recorded as Fermidge in both the GRO Birth Index and on her birth certificate. Her father’s name is recorded as Lyon Fermidge (agricultural labourer) on her birth certificate and as Lionel Furmidge (labourer, deceased) on her death certificate. She died at 3, Ashton’s Yard, Nottingham, her mother Mary Furmidge, named as the informant, present at the death. FURMIDGE, Anna Elizabeth (I993)
