109 Catherine appears in a number of news articles in 1929. In August it is reported that Catherine applied for an affiliation order against George Knight, which was heard at the Nottingham Shire Hall. According to the report, Catherine had met Knight in 1927, believing him to be a single man named Jack Morris. Catherine had told Knight when they met that she was already an unmarried mother however this had not put him off and both her brother and mother heard him propose marriage to Catherine, although this did not go ahead. In February 1928 Catherine had heard a rumour he was already a married man, which her mother discovered to be true, however Catherine continued her relationship with him leading to the birth of a child in September 1928. This situation had resulted in Catherine leaving her parents home. Knight was ordered to pay 5s a week for 16 years as well as £1 1s towards birth expenses.
Catherine was back in the news in October this time however she was sent to prison for 6 weeks as a result of deserting her child and leaving it chargeable to the Basford Guardians. Evidence was given by Catherine’s mother that Catherine had tried to leave the child with her parents but as they already took care of her first illegitimate child, they had refused. Evidence was also given that the child had been privately fostered for a while, Catherine agreeing to pay the foster mother maintenance. Ultimately however Catherine’s mother had obtained an “admittance order” for the child to be taken to Basford. George Knight, the child’s father, was also brought to court. He had not kept up the payments due to Catherine as he was no longer in work. He was ordered to pay the money due to the Poor Law Authorities. (Sources: West Bridgford Times & Echo, published 23 August 1929 and 25 October 1929).
FURMIDGE, Catherine Olivia (I609)

110 Catherine’s surname is recorded as Furmadge in the GRO Birth Index. FURMIDGE, Catherine Elizabeth (I700)

111 Charles Richard’s surname in his death certificate is recorded as Furmadge and his age (27 years) suggests a year of birth of 1828-1829. He is recorded as being a Draper’s Assistant from Winchester and died at the Consumption Hospital in Brompton, London. The Hampshire Advertiser records that he died in London “after a lingering illness”. FURMEDGE, Charles Richard (I388)

112 Charles William Pain’s father was in military service in Scotland and Charles was subsequently born in Edinburgh however his family were natives of the Isle of Wight and he can be found there with his grandparents in the 1901 and 1911 England census (Class: RG13, Piece: 1025, Folio: 85, Page: 21 & Class: RG14, Piece: 5725, Schedule: 332). He served with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders during the First World War and was taken prisoner during the Battle of Le Cateau on 26th August 1914; it is unclear exactly when he was released. A baptism record for their daughter places Charles and his wife Dorothy in India in early 1921, Charles is described as a Lance Corporal in the 1st Battalion Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders (Reference: N-3-125/85/5, British India Office (Presidency of Bombay) Parish Register, Families in British India Society (FIBIS), accessed on www.findmypast.co.uk). He took a commission with the Indian Army Ordinance Corps on 12 Aug 1922 and served with them until 1948 (Number OS 100, Indian Army Records of Service, IOR/L/MIL/14/50019, The National Archives). The newspaper announcement of Charles and Dorothy’s silver wedding anniversary in 1944 notes that they are currently resident at Shahjahanpur, India (Andrews Newspaper Index Cards). Both Charles and Dorothy died in their native Isle of Wight. PAIN, Charles William (I765)

113 Charles’ surname is recorded as FURMEDGE in the GRO Birth Index however in the transcript for his baptism record it has been recorded as either FURNEDGE or TARMEDGE. His recorded surname in the GRO Death Index is FURMIDGE, whilst the burial register transcription is FIRMAGE. FURMEDGE, Charles Woodrow (I74)

114 Charles’ surname is recorded as Furmidge in the GRO Birth Index but as Furmage in his baptism register entry.

Charles served with the Royal Navy, joining as a Boy (2nd class) on 14 August 1882. He was discharged (pensioned) on 20 June 1905. The last few years of his service (Jun 1900 to Jun 1905) was spent in the Coast Guard service in Ireland.
FURMAGE, Charles (I1212)

127 Claude Lee Furmidge joined the Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment (“The Sherwood Foresters”) on 14th July 1915 and was deployed in France. He reached the rank of Lance Corporal and then transferred to the Royal Leicestershire Regiment. He was finally transferred to the Labour Corps in February 1917 and raised to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant (Sources: World War I Medal Rolls Index Cards; Service Medal & Award Rolls; Supplement to the London Gazette). In October 1915, the Melton Mowbray Times published a report that Claude had been wounded whilst in France and only a few weeks after being deployed (Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette, 01 October 1915, Page: 3, “Local soldier wounded”).
Claude was also injured in 1934 when it is reported he was knocked down by a motor car whilst alighting from a tram on his way how from work late one evening. He suffered fractures to his thigh and lower right leg (The Nottingham Evening Post published 31 May 1934, Page: 5, “Another Mansfield Road Mishap”).

David also travelled the world as a member of crew of a merchant marine vessel (Richmond Times Dispatch (Richmond, Virginia), published 08 March 1943) and was working as a baker in Chicago following the war (Richmond Times Dispatch (Richmond, Virginia), published 25 March 1947). FURMIDGE, David (I1015)

139 Dinah’s surname is recorded as Firmige in the baptism register. FURMIDGE, Dinah (I901)

140 Dorothy was a widow when she married Vincent Walter Furmidge. She had previously married Stuart Walter Ratcliffe in 1942. He died on war service on 25th November 1944 (GRO Marriage Index Oct-Dec 1942, Dorothy E Priestley and Stuart W Ratcliffe, District: Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, Vol: 7B, Page: 602 & National Probate Calendar 1945 entry for Stuart Walter Ratcliffe). PRIESTLEY, Dorothy Elizabeth (I643)

141 Dorothy’s date of birth is recorded as 28 Jun 1910 in both the 1939 Register and GRO Death Index, whereas it is 14 April in her baptism record. Her baptism date precedes the 28 June birth date making it unlikely. Also her birth was recorded in the April-June quarter, which would only give a couple of days after her birth for the registration had she been born 28 June. FURMEDGE, Dorothy Ethel (I260)

142 Edith Burgess was a widow when she married Harry Furmedge. She had previously married Frederick Hind in 1898 and she is recorded as Edith Hind in the Queensland Marriages transcript for her marriage to Harry Furmedge. Frederick Hind died in 1914 and is buried in Cairns Cemetery, Cairns, Queensland, Australia (Find A Grave website, memorial ID 174121069, accessed 23 April 2024). BURGESS, Edith (I401)

143 Edith Maud’s cemetery burial record identifies her as the “daughter of Charles Furmedge” however her death certificate confirms her as the daughter of Julia Maude Furmedge, Domestic Servant of 32 Nessus Street, Landport. This is consistent with her baptism register entry which records her as the daughter of Julia Furmedge and the address, Nessus Street, is also the same as recorded on the burial record. FURMEDGE, Edith Maud (I445)

144 Edward Furmidge was baptised at St Helen’s, Trowell, Nottinghamshire however his abode is recorded as “Albany”, New Stapleford. FURMIDGE, Edward (I529)

145 Electoral Registers for Townsville, Queensland, Australia for 1939, 1949 and 1959 show both Archibald William and Emma Rose Campbell living at 50, Seventh Street, Townsville; Archibald’s occupation is recorded as Labourer (note: these records were accessed on www.findmypast.co.uk; the Electoral roll for 1939 was a digital image however those for 1949 and 1959 were transcripts). Seventh Street was the residence of Emma Rose on her marriage certificate.

The marriage certificate for Archibald and Emma Rose records his residence at the time as Sturt Street, Townsville, his occupation as Labourer and his parents as John Campbell, a stock inspector, and Mary Burns. The certificate records that Archibald was born at Tweed Heads, New South Wales, which was in the Murwillumbah registration district, in about 1900.

A birth index entry was identified for an Archie W Campbell, b. 1905 in the Murwillumbah registration district, parents: John and Mary E Campbell. This is the only entry registered in Murwillumbah between 1895 and 1910 for either an Archibald or Archie, with or without a middle name William (source: https://familyhistory.bdm.nsw.gov.au).

An obituary was published in the Tribune (03 April 1968) for an Archibald William “Duffy” Campbell who died in Townsville on 19 March 1968. Unfortunately, the obituary does not include any details of his family and it cannot be confirmed that this is the same Archibald William Campbell who married Emma Rose Furmedge, although it seems possible. An “Archie William Campbell” is buried in the Belgian Gardens Cemetery, Townsville (the same cemetery in which Emma’s older brother Harry is buried), who died 19 March 1968 and appears to be the same man as named in the obituary. His age at death is recorded as 62 years and he would therefore have been born in about 1902. The death index records his parents’ names as William Campbell (not John, as previously) and Mary Elizabeth Burns. Whilst his father’s first name is different, the mother’s name appears consistent with the birth and marriage records.
CAMPBELL, Archibald William (I408)

146 Elizabeth Ann is recorded as a widow in the 1898 marriage register entry for her marriage to Edward Furmidge. Her married name is Jenkins and her maiden-name is Hall. She appears to have previously married William Jenkins at St Peter’s, Nottingham in 1876 and is recorded with William in the 1881 England census (they have no children co-resident with them), living in Ilkeston, Derbyshire (Class: RG11, Piece: 3327, Folio: 131, Page: 27). By 1891 she is resident with Edward Furmidge, described as a “relative” at 21 Newstead Street, Bulwell, Nottinghamshire (1891 England census: Class: RG12, Piece: 2673, Folio: 55, Page: 16). William Jenkins is also resident in Bulwell, living with Eliza Charlton (and 2 children) who is described in the census as his “paramour” (1891 England census: Class: RG12, Piece: 2672, Folio: 115, Page: 24). William Jenkins appears to have died in 1897, leaving Elizabeth Ann free to marry Edward Furmidge in 1898. HALL, Elizabeth Ann (I505)

147 Elizabeth is recorded as Elizabeth Anne Firmidge in the Harby parish baptism register. She is referred to as “Mrs. Nannie Green” in her sister Louisa’s obituary published in the Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette, Friday 23rd September 1949. FURMIDGE, Elizabeth Ann (I571)

148 Elizabeth is recorded in the 1939 Register at the same address as her married sister Phoebe Baldry at 177a Spring Bank, Kingston-upon-Hull, Yorkshire, however her date of birth is recorded as 14 September 1899 (Class: RG101, Piece: 3138I). FURMIDGE, Elizabeth (I695)

149 Elizabeth was a widow on her marriage to Vincent Furmidge in 1902. She had previously married George Holmes on 11th June 1879 at St Jude’s, Moorfields, Sheffield. George was a widower at the time of the marriage and was 44 years old (Parish Register, PR141/2/2 (alternative reference: PR141/8), Page: 107; digital image accessed on www.ancestry.co.uk; original data: Sheffield Archives). George Holmes is not enumerated with his wife in either the 1891 or 1901 England census however Vincent Furmidge is enumerated in the same household as a Lodger / Boarder (Class: RG12, Piece: 2681, Folio: 63, Page 8 (note: Vincent’s age is recorded as 26); & Class: RG13, Piece: 3188, Folio: 40, Page: 21). STALLABRASS, Elizabeth (I580)

150 Elizabeth’s baptism register entry appears to record her first names as Elizabeth Ann Blinder [sic. Belinda?] and she is the daughter of Elizabeth Ann Jenkins of 21 Newstead Street, Bulwell, single woman. The information in the section for parents first names appears as “Edward” [struck-through] “Elizabeth Ann” [not struck through] “Jenk..” [struck through]. JENKINS, Elizabeth Ann Belinda Furmidge (I554)
