Elizabeth’s date of birth is recorded as 25 Sep 1899 in the 1939 Register, whilst it is recorded as 26 Sep 1901 in Norman John Furmage’s naturalisation documents. Her birth was registered in the Oct-Dec quarter of 1901, confirming that 1901 is the correct year of her birth. Generally, her place of birth is recorded as Southampton however her birth was registered in South Stoneham, Hampshire, suggesting she was born near but not in Southampton itself. In the 1901 England census (taken just prior to Elizabeth’s birth) her parents are living at 41, Howards Grove, Shirley, South Stoneham, Hampshire and so Shirley may be a more accurate place of birth for Elizabeth (Class: RG13, Piece: 1073, Folio: 39, Page: 20). | MAGGS, Elizabeth Florence (I1223)

Ellen (or Helen) Sarah Jane Chapman otherwise Simpson (formerly Furmidge) lived with William Henry Simpson at 72, Bassein Park Road, Hammersmith, London. They can be identified at this address in the 1911 and 1921 England census and in electoral rolls (entries for 1918 to 1930 noted). The 1911 England census records that they had been married for 16 years providing an approximate “marriage” date of 1895; they had no children (Class: RG14, Piece: 205, Schedule: 143). The 1911 census records that Ellen was born in Cape Colony, South Africa, whilst the 1921 census records her birth place more precisely as Grahamstown, South Africa (Class: RG15, Piece: 223, Schedule: 335). Ellen is recorded as both ‘Helen Sarah Jane Chapman’ and ‘Helen Sarah Jane Simpson’ in the GRO Death Index. Her death certificate confirms that she was the widow of Joseph Chapman, a Printer, whilst the informant was W. H. Simpson who was “causing the body to be buried”. | FURMIDGE, Ellen Sarah Jane (I1041)

Ellen’s surname is recorded as Furmidge in the GRO Marriage Index but appears as Furmedge in the parish marriage register.
It appears that Ellen’s husband, Charles Isaac Hill, had died on or after November 1854 (see notes for Charles Isaac Hill) and that Ellen had moved to London, where a daughter Anne Ellen Hill was baptised in August 1854. In 1857 Amy Gibson Hill was born in Croydon, Surrey. The baptism, which did not occur until 1873, names the parents as John and Ellen Hill; the birth certificate records the parents as Charles Hill and Ellen Hill (formerly Furmedge).
In the 1861 and 1871 England census, an Ellen Hill of the correct age and place of birth is living with John Hill (a widower) and is described as his “aunt” and her status as “married”. John Hill, widower, and Ellen Hill, widow (father: William Furmedge, Hotel Keeper) were married at Kensington, London on 10th November 1873. An entry in the 1881 census was not found however in the 1891 England census, John and Ellen Hill are recorded as married; Amy Gibson Hill is also recorded at the same address. Amy Gibson Hill married Frank Harvey in 1900 and her father is recorded in the marriage register as John Hill (deceased). John had died in 1893 and is buried in Brompton Cemetery in the same plot as his first wife, Emma Hill (late Beattie, formerly Taylor) who died in 1850 and Ellen Hill (late Hill, formerly Furmedge) who died in 1907. | FURMEDGE, Ellen (I386)

Ellen’s surname is recorded as Furnedge in the GRO Birth Index. Her name is recorded as Nellie Furmedge in the GRO Marriage Index and she is also recorded as Nellie in the 1911 census (23 Cemeas Street, Liverpool, Reference: Class: RG14, Piece: 22128, Schedule: 28). | FURMEDGE, Ellen (I242)

Elsie is shown in the 1939 Register as the wife of John Edward Furmidge. She married Albert Stoker in 1949; the GRO Marriage Index records her under both her maiden-name, Hardy, and previous married name, Furmidge, indicating that she was a divorcee at the time of her second marriage. There is a minor discrepancy in her date of birth recorded in the 1939 Register (23rd November) and in the GRO Death Index (25th November). | HARDY, Elsie (I745)
|
| 159 |
Elsie Smith married Sydney Peakman in 1926 and she is recorded as Elsie Peakman in the 1939 Register. It is assumed from the GRO Marriage Index entries that she was a divorcee at the time of her marriage to Fred Furmidge (entries appear in the Index for both ‘Elsie Smith’ and ‘Elsie Peakman’). Elsie and Fred were married by special licence. | SMITH, Elsie (I736)

Ernest Reginald Furmidge is enumerated in the household of his married aunt Sarah Norris in the 1911 England census (Regge Firmage, nephew, at 14, Pitt Street, Ryde, Isle of Wight, Class: RG14, Piece: 5722, Schedule: 258). He cannot be located in the 1921 England census. He emigrated to Germany some time prior to 1939. An Ernst Furmidge born 27 Feb 1905 at “Wight” and his wife Maria (maiden-name Gunther; born 15 August 1905) are recorded as resident at Beckum (Northern Germany), in the British occupation zone, until and on the 3 Sep 1939. Additional information regarding their son confirms Ernst’s full name as Ernst Reginald Furmidge (Registration of Foreigners and German Persecutees: British Zone: digital images accessed on www.arolsen-archives.org, Arolsen Archives, Bad Arolsen, Germany).
One possible but not proven link to Ernest’s emigration to Germany and residence at Beckum relates to his mother’s marriage to Hermann Wippermann, a German resident living in England in 1912. Preliminary research suggests Hermann’s family originated from the area near Beckum and it is possible therefore that Hermann, his new wife Kate, and her son Ernest emigrated to Germany some time after 1912. | FURMIDGE, Ernest Reginald (I845)

Florence’s date of birth is recorded as 29 Dec 1903 in Norman John Furmage’s naturalisation documents and also as Dec 1903 in the New York, marriage license index. However, no birth record has been located for a Florence McGlew born in New York State in 1903. A birth record can be located for 1898 which gives the same parent’s names as recorded in the marriage license index source. This earlier year of birth is also supported by her entries in the U.S. Federal Census. | MCGLEW, Florence (I1226)

Following her husband’s death, Jane Furmedge continued for a short time as Inn Keeper of the Bell & Crown Inn, High Street, Winchester (in addition to Carrier & Coal Merchant) as evidenced by an advert paced in the Hampshire Chronicle by Jane and published 23 December 1848. The 1851 England census however describes her as a Retired Innkeeper (Class: HO17, Piece: 1674, Folio: 233, Page: 3) and the 1861 England census records no occupation (Class: RG9, Piece: 691, Folio: 21, Page: 33). By 1871, she was an inmate at St John’s Hospital, Winchester, where she died in 1878 ([1] 1871 England census: Class: RG10, Piece: 1211, Folio: 10, Page: 51. Frances married Arthur E Bowler in 1943. It is assumed from the GRO Marriage Index entries that she was a divorcee at the time of her marriage to Frank James Furmedge (entries appear in the Index for both ‘Frances A Milford’ and ‘Frances A Bowler’).
Her date of birth recorded in the 1939 Register is 04 Dec 1916; whereas 04 Dec 1915 is recorded in the GRO Death Index. From a review of the GRO Birth Index her birth appears to have been registered in Jan-Mar 1916, making a birth date of 04 Dec 1915 more likely. | MILFORD, Frances Anne (I264)

Frances’ death certificate records her surname as Furmage. She died at the Workhouse Infirmary on Princes Street, St George in the East, London and is described as a “Charwoman of 4, Matilda Street”. The informant on the certificate is the resident medical practitioner. There is no indication of her marital status (usually for a married woman the certificate would state her husband’s details in the occupation section, however that is not the case here) or details of any family. However, 4 Matilda Street is the address given on the parish marriage record for both William Henry Furmedge and Frances Barker. Also, Mary Kitchener witnessed the marriage in July 1882 and there is a Mary Kitchener living at 4, Matilda Street, St George in the East, London in the 1881 England census (Class: RG11, Piece: 451, Folio: 97, Page: 27). It has therefore been concluded that the death certificate is for Frances Barker who married William Henry Furmedge in 1882. | BARKER, Frances (I280)

George Churches age is recorded as 72 years old on both the GRO death index and his burial record which would mean he was born about 1842 and not about 1836 as suggested by other sources. His address, however, is recorded as Midland Avenue, Stroud in his burial record which is the same address as recorded in his wife, Frances’ burial record and in Frances’ sister, Emma Furmidge’s death certificate and burial register entry. All three were buried at Slad, Gloucestershire. | CHURCHES, George (I884)
