301 Joseph’s parish baptism register entry records his date of birth as 25 April 1899, however his entry in the Register of Seamen, Special Index, Alphabetical Series (The National Archives, BT 350 / CR 10) records his date of birth as 24 April 1899. A similar anomaly is seen with his twin brother, James, however in that case there is other supporting evidence that 24 April 1899 is correct. As James was born at 2.45AM (source: birth certificate) it seems unlikely that Joseph could have been born on the 25 April (and James on the 24 April) e.g., if they had been born either side of midnight. There is no entry in the GRO Online Index for the birth of Joseph Furmedge (an error has been reported) although an entry is recorded in the older indexes available on e.g., www.findmypast.co.uk and www.ancestry.co.uk. A copy of the birth certificate is required to resolve this anomaly. In the meantime it is assumed that 24 April 1899 is correct.

Joseph’s marriage to Margaret Baines has been recorded on both his and her baptism register entries.

No death record has been identified for Joseph however his father’s obituary notice in the Liverpool Echo names his living children and Joseph is not listed. It has therefore been assumed that he died prior to 1951.

Caroline and her husband Alex H P Huitt were the marriage witnesses. No record has been found for Kate after 1912. FURMIDGE, Kate (I790)

306 Kate’s surname is recorded as Fermidge in the parish baptism register. FURMIDGE, Kate (I655)

307 Katherine Amy O’Hara, married woman, is named as executor in the national probate calendar entry for Lucy Furmedge (d. 1948). 315 Leonard Howard Maddicks [sic.] married Josephine Mace on 9th Nov 1904 in Queensland, Australia (Reference: 1904/000798; www.familyhistory.bdm.qld.gov.au). They had no children. In 1938, Josephine was granted a divorce (an “order nisi”) on the grounds of desertion. She stated that her husband had left her in January 1925 (The Courier-Mail (Brisbane, Queensland), published 10 Sep 1938, Page: 10). Electoral Rolls for Kelvin Grove, Brisbane, Australia suggest that he was living with Mary Elizabeth Furmidge from at least 1934 (or before). They were living at 40, Victoria Street, Red Hill (Kelvin Grove, Brisbane) at this time of his death in 1939 (Electoral Roll transcripts accessed on www.findmypast.co.uk). He is buried at Toowong Cemetery, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia (Find a Grave database and images, Memorial ID: 204898466, Plot: 10-7-6, unmarked grave). MADDICK, Leonard Howard (I801)

316 Leonard is registered in the GRO Birth Index as Leonard Furmidge Jenkins. The parish baptism register records him as the son of Edward Furmidge [Jenkins] & Elizabeth Ann Jenkins of 21, Newstead Street, Bulwell. He was 4 months old at the time of his death. JENKINS, Leonard Furmidge (I552)

317 Lilian’s maiden-name is recorded as Goldschmidt on her husband’s death notice and as Goldsmith or her death information form. Her full date of birth (“5/1/1883”) is also recorded on her death information form but could be interpreted as either 05 January 1883 or 01 May 1883. GOLDSCHMIDT, Lilian Ruby (I1074)

318 Lily’s date of birth is recorded as 02 May 1887 in the 1939 Register and as 02 May 1890 in the GRO Death Index. Whilst the year is inconsistent with her entry in the GRO birth index (and the timing of her parents marriage), it has been assumed that the day/month are correct. FURMEDGE, Lily (I276)

319 Lily’s date of birth is recorded as 09 October 1909 in the 1939 Register but as 16 October 1909 in her baptism register entry. DOWSETT, Lily Frances (I1224)

324 Louisa’s date of birth is recorded as 05 Jun 1915 in the GRO Death Index. MIVELD, Louisa Teresa (I256)

325 Louisa’s surname is recorded as Furmadge in the parish burial register but as Furmidge in the GRO Death Index. FURMIDGE, Louisa (I862)

326 Louisa’s surname is recorded as Furrnedge in the GRO Marriage Index. FURMEDGE, Louisa Jane (I330)

327 Lucy Wilmer Thompson was the second daughter of Lieutenant Harris Peckover Thompson, 15th M.N.I. (Madras Native Infantry). She was the niece and adopted daughter of Mr & Mrs Hosford, of Bedford Place, Russell Square, London. (Source: Marriage Announcement in The Salisbury and Winchester Journal, and General Advertiser, Saturday, October 19, 1872).
Her last will and testament was made 3rd February 1910 with a Codicil added 26th October 1928. Her son, John Harris Furmedge was assigned Executor. Her details are given as Lucy Wilmer Furmedge wife of John Roberts Furmedge of Fernside, Wokingham, Berkshire, Esquire. Her bequests were: (1) All jewellery, wearing apparel, furniture and silver “particularly the Hosford silver which was given to me by my late uncle William Hosford and is distinguished by the Hosford crest”, etc. to her three daughters (Ann Helen Furmedge, Lilian Hosford Furmedge & Lucy Roberts Furmedge); (2) Remaining property to be disposed of and divided amongst her daughters. The will was witnessed by Walter T Grigson, 31 Bolton Gardens, London SW, Articled Clerk to Chartered Accountant. The Codicil amends her address to 44 Bouverie Square, Folkestone, Kent and lays out provisions in the event of the death of one of her daughters during her lifetime. The Codicil was witnessed by Alice G Courtney, Binfield, Berkshire and Lionel G Courtney Lt Binfield, Berkshire Temp LT ASC. Lucy Wilmer Furmedge died 16th February 1928, her address recorded as 126, Sandgate Road, Folkestone, Kent, and the will proved 24th March 1928. (Source: Will obtained from www.gov.uk).
THOMPSON, Lucy Wilmer (I4)

328 Lucy’s surname is recorded as Furmadge in both the GRO Marriage Index and her parish marriage register entry. It is also noted that the mother’s maiden-name recorded in the GRO Birth Index for 6 of her children registered in London registration districts (Kensington & Newington) is Furmadge whilst for 1 child registered in Grantham, Lincolnshire registration district it is Furmidge. FURMIDGE, Lucy (I894)

329 Lyne’s name is recorded as Line Fermidge in the GRO Birth Index. There are two newspaper reports indicating that he possibly fathered an illegitimate child in about 1856, the mother being Elizabeth Walker. In the first article he was ordered to make payments to Elizabeth Walker and in the second he was imprisoned for one calendar month for disobeying a bastardy order (Grantham Journal published 23 August 1856; Leicestershire Mercury published 16 January 1858). He was living at Newbold at the time of his marriage to Mary Goodwin in January 1860. He died in June 1861 whilst working at Staveley for the Midland Railway attending to the point where coal trucks were shunted to another line. He was caught between the buffers and died of his injuries. He left a widow, Mary, and one child. FURMIDGE, Lyne (I902)

330 Lyne’s Royal Navy Service Record gives his date of birth as 1st (not 11th) November 1872. It also appears to state that his parents were John and Elizabeth (not John and Ann). Other details support that this is the correct record for Lyne Furmidge son of John Furmidge and Ann Hardwick. He enrolled on 2nd June 1915 and served until demobbed on 24th January 1919.
The 1921 England census records that Lyne and Jane had an adopted son, born about 1919, whose parents had died; his first name has been over-written and can’t be deciphered (Class: RG15, Piece: 24052, Schedule: 318). Otherwise there is no evidence that Lyne and Jane had children of their own. A great nephew, James Rymer, is recorded on the 1939 Register with Lyne and Jane however his year of birth is recorded as 1921, making it unlikely that this is the adopted child in the 1921 census. James Rymer is also recorded as the informant on Jane Furmidge’s death certificate.
FURMIDGE, Lyne (I708)

331 Mabel Florence’s mother re-married William Aaron Dalton in 1886, and Mabel’s surname is recorded (by default) as Dalton in the 1891 and 1901 census; by 1901 the family have moved from Leicester to Stockingford, Nuneaton, Warwickshire (Class: RG12, Piece: 2528, Folio: 74, Page: 16 & Class: RG13, Piece: 2901, Folio: 102, Page: 8). Mabel’s father’s name and occupation are blank (not recorded) on her parish marriage register entry. FURMIDGE, Mabel Florence (I638)

332 Mabel is recorded as Mabel Grace McCluskey on her marriage to Kenneth Furmidge; she had previously married in 1938. LAWRENCE, Mabel Grace (I1023)

333 Mabel Kate’s surname has been recorded as Furnedge in her birth record transcription. FURMEDGE, Mabel Kate (I405)

334 Mabel was the younger daughter of the late James Bray and Mrs Medhurst of Shoreham, Kent. She was a widow at the time of her marriage to Cyril James Furmidge, having previously married H. S. Gillett (“Lewes Wedding”, Sussex Express 26th January 1940).

Mabel’s entry in the GRO Death Index records her date of birth as 07 March 1906 whereas it is recorded as 07 March 1905 in the 1939 Register. Based on a review of the GRO Birth Index it seems likely that 07 March 1905 is the correct date.
BRAY, Mabel Alice (I525)

335 Mabel’s date of birth is recorded as 4th June 1904 on the 1939 Register but as 9th June 1904 in the GRO Death Index. HARRIMAN, Mabel Ethel (I612)

336 Margaret Isabella Furmidge is also recorded as Isabel Margaret and Bella M Furmidge in a number of sources. FURMIDGE, Margaret Isabella (I1005)

337 Marian’s first name is recorded as either Marian or Marion. Her date of birth is recorded as 30th March 1920 in the 1939 Register however both her baptism register entry and the GRO Death Index record it as 29th March 1920. FURMIDGE, Marian Freck (I628)

338 Marriage Register, 1897: Annie is a widow on her marriage to James John Furmedge. Her married name is Annie Bell Browning; her father is George Lipscombe. One of the two witnesses is Eliza Lipscombe, a name which is also recorded as an executor on the national probate calendar for James John Furmedge. LIPSCOMBE, Annie Bell (I27)

339 Mary Ann’s surname is recorded as Furbidge in the GRO Birth Index. A transcript of Mary Anne (aka. Annie) Furmage’s parish marriage register entry records her father as James (not John) Furmage; note: a digital image has not been identified to confirm if this is a transcription error or error in the original record (Berkshire Marriage Index, Berkshire Family History Society). FURMAGE, Mary Ann (I1202)

340 Mary Ann’s surname is recorded as Furmage in the baptism register and as Furmidge in the GRO Death Index. FURMEDGE, Mary Ann (I297)

341 Mary Ann’s surname is recorded as Furmidge in the GRO Birth Index; her mother’s maiden name is recorded as Hayward. Mary Ann’s surname is recorded as Farmidge and her mother’s given name as “Mary Ann” in the Bishops’ Transcript of her baptism record.

Mary A Furmidge (and her son George E Furmidge) are boarders with the Dyer family in the 1871 England census; the household includes William J Dyer, a single man aged 25 (born about 1847, Ryde, Isle of Wight), French Polisher (South Street, Ryde, Isle of Wight, Class: RG10, Piece: 1165, Folio: 123, Page: 32). By 1881, William J Dyer and Mary Ann are (allegedly) married with four children (12 Prince Street, Ryde, Isle of Wight, Class: RG11, Piece: 1178, Folio: 114, Page: 23). The eldest child, Edward Dyer was born about 1867 suggesting that this is likely to be the George E Furmidge recorded in the 1871 census. The next eldest child was born in 1874. No marriage record has been located for William J and Mary Ann; it has been assumed that they married some time between the 1871 census (when both are recorded as single) and 1874 when the second eldest child was born. Of the four children born to William J and Mary A Dyer, the GRO Birth Index records Furmedge as the mother’s maiden-name for two (William Dyer, b. 1874 & Ellen Louisa Dyer, b. 1877) and Furmidge for two (Ernest Charles Dyer b. 1880 & George Dyer b. 1884).
FURMEDGE, Mary Ann (I270)

342 Mary Ann’s surname is recorded as Furmidge in the GRO Death Index. LOXLEY, Mary Ann (I312)

343 Mary Culverwell is believed to be the daughter of Adam and Prudence Culverwell. Her father, Adam, died about 1804 and in his will, proved 19 May 1804, he names Mary Furmage (exact spelling “ffurmage”) amongst his daughters (PROB 11/1408/275, The National Archives).

A potential burial record for Mary also spells her surname “Furmage”. It records that she died at Musbury, Devon aged 56 years. Whilst there is no direct evidence confirming that the Mary Furmage buried 1820 is also the Mary Furmidge, wife of John Furmidge, this is the most likely record for her burial in Musbury, Devon.
CULVERWELL, Mary (I989)

344 Mary Edna is recorded as Mary Edna Gough on her marriage to Kenneth Furmidge; she had previously married in 1951. GLONEK, Mary Edna (I1024)

345 Mary Elizabeth Furmidge travelled to Australia in 1915 and then settled in Brisbane, Queensland (Board of Trade: Commercial & Statistical Department and Successors: Outward Passenger Lists: BT27, The National Archives; 1922 Electoral Roll transcript for Mannion Street, Red Hill, Ithaca, Brisbane, Queensland accessed on www.findmypast.co.uk).
She appears to have formed a relationship with Leonard Howard Maddick after his separation from his wife in about 1925. His divorce was not granted until 1938 and he died in 1939. There is no evidence of a marriage between Mary Elizabeth and Leonard Howard however in later records (e.g., electoral rolls, death index and grave) she is recorded as Mary Elizabeth Maddick (or Maddicks).
FURMIDGE, Mary Elizabeth (I797)

346 Mary has no apparent entry in the GRO Birth Index. Her details are added based on her parish baptism record. She was baptised privately on 14th August and accepted into the church on 22nd August 1869. FURMIDGE, Mary (I497)

347 Mary is last recorded in the 1881 England census; by 1891 her husband, Richard, is recorded as a widower, however no entry has been located for Mary Wood in the GRO Death Index between 1881 and 1891. A burial record has also not been located for Gloucestershire, where Mary was most likely living at the time of her death. FURMIDGE, Mary Culverwell (I880)

348 Mary’s age and place of birth is consistently recorded in her parish marriage record (age only) and the England census for 1891, 1901 and 1911 (age and place of birth), giving her an approximate year of birth of 1853-54 and place of birth of Ampthill, Bedfordshire. In the parish marriage register her father is recorded as Samuel Bunker, labourer and one of the witnesses was a Harriett Bunker. The 1891 England census also records a niece, Annie Bunker, born about 1878-9 in Holloway, London (Furmage household, Kingsgate Cottages, 1 Shoot Upper Hill, Hampstead, London, Class: RG12, Piece: 111, Folio: 39, Page: 10 and Folio: 40, Page 11).

Research using the information above concluded that Mary Bunker was in fact born in 1846 (not 1853-54) at Ampthill, Bedfordshire to Samuel Bunker and Mary Mead. This family has a daughter Harriett Bunker, born in 1850 (to Samuel Bunker and his second wife Caroline Mead). An Annie Bunker, born 1878-9 in Holloway/London, is also present in this family as a granddaughter in the 1881 England census (Class: RG11, Piece: 1634, Folio: 83, Page: 27) and as a niece in the 1901 England census (Class: RG13, Piece: 1515, Folio: 95, Page: 11). The only candidate for a Mary Bunker born 1853-54 in the Ampthill registration district was born at Steppingley, Bedfordshire to Samuel & Hannah Bunker and can be traced in the England census as a single woman from 1881 onwards (the period when George Furmage and Mary Bunker were married) and can thus be excluded.

Mary’s death certificate and burial register entry confirm this earlier year of birth as being correct.
BUNKER, Mary (I1228)

349 Mary’s surname is recorded as Furmadge in the parish burial register but as Furmidge in the GRO Death Index. FURMIDGE, Mary (I865)

350 Mary’s surname is recorded as Furmedqe on her marriage record transcription. FURMEDGE, Mary (I397)
