58 Although Edward and Elizabeth Ann were not married, Felicia’s surname has been registered as Furmidge in the GRO Birth Index. Her entry in the baptism register records her as the daughter of Edward and Elizabeth Ann Furmidge. FURMIDGE, Felicia Elsie (I553)

59 Although his name is recorded as Chrisostomes Elisavites in the marriage record transcript, his wife’s parents’ obituaries indicate that she was known as Mrs Nickles. This name change is supported by his wife’s grave memorial: “Elizabeth Annie Nickles Nee Furmedge 5.8.1900 - 29.6.1970 Wife of Christopher Nickles” and also his own memorial: “Christopher Nickles… Born as Chrisostomos Elisavites in Kokkari, Samos, Greece … Husband of Elizabeth Annie Furmedge…”. ELISAVITES, Chrisostomes (I403)

60 Although John Edward married in 1937, he is recorded as single in his World War Two service record enrolment form, dated 1942, giving his mother’s name and address as his next of kin. The Newcastle Journal (published 07 November 1942, Page: 3) records that he was awarded a decree nisi on grounds of his wife’s adultery with Albert Stoker (whom she married in 1949). FURMIDGE, John Edward (I741)

61 Although she was registered as Betty Furmedge in the GRO Birth Index, all other sources noted record her given names as Wendy Elizabeth. FURMEDGE, Betty (I12)

62 Although William was recorded as “Willie” in the GRO Birth Index, his parish baptism register entry and the England census record his name as “William”. FURMIDGE, William (I528)

63 An entry for Joseph in the GRO Birth Index has not been identified; his surname is recorded as Firmage in his baptism record. His mother’s maiden-name is recorded as Crummy. FURMEDGE, Joseph (I235)

64 An entry in the GRO Birth Index has not been found for John Furmidge (or common variant surnames). FURMIDGE, John (I904)

65 An entry in the GRO Birth Index has not been identified for Bernard Furmedge (or similar variants). His date of birth is recorded in his baptism record.

He joined the merchant navy in about 1923 and was engaged on several ships in-between 1924 and 1926. His card shows that he had been inactive for at least 5 years prior to 1932 (Register of Seamen, BT 349 / CR1 & BT 348 / CR2, The National Archives; accessed on www.findmypast.co.uk). He also appears on New York City Passenger Lists for 1924 (transcripts accessed on www.findmypast.co.uk): although he is recorded as a passenger (the lists also include crew), some of the ship’s names tally with those recorded on his merchant navy card. Except for one passenger list, the departure port is given as Hamburg (the exception is Greenock), travelling to New York via e.g., Southampton, Cherbourg, Quebec/Bermuda/Halifax. Only the year (1924) is recorded on these transcripts, not the exact dates and there appears to be some duplicatory transcripts (New York City Passenger Lists, 1820-1957: Reference: NARA: M237 & T715).

No death record has been identified for Bernard however his father’s obituary notice in the Liverpool Echo names his living children and Bernard is not listed. It has therefore been assumed that he died prior to 1951.
FURMEDGE, Bernard (I221)

66 An entry in the GRO Death Index cannot be found for Henry however from burial records he appears to have died in 1853. His surname has been recorded as Furmadge in the burial register transcript. In the 1851 England census he is enumerated in the same household as his brothers William (who is married) and James, all three recorded as Mariners (Wootton Bridge, Isle of Wight: Class: HO107, Piece: 1663, Folio: 448, Page: 12). There is a possible record for him for 1846 in the Merchant Navy Register of Masters 1845-1854 (The National Archives BT115 / 4, digital image accessed on www.findmypast.co.uk). FURMIDGE, Henry (I864)

67 Andrew was a widower at the time of his marriage to Ida Furmidge. He was living in Stathern in the early 1920’s and moved, with Ida, to Eaton in the late 1920s. He died at Markfield Hospital, age 73 years, just nine months after his retirement from the Eastwell Iron Ore Company. He was a veteran of the First World War and a member of the British Legion (Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published 11 April 1958). PORTER, Andrew (I671)

68 Ann Elizabeth’s surname has been recorded as Furmedge in the GRO Birth Index and transcribed as Furmadge for her baptism register entry.

In 1901 Ann Elizabeth is boarding at 12, Jessie Road, Portsmouth, together with her daughter. Although she is recorded as married her husband is not present and he has not been located elsewhere (Class: RG13, Piece: 987, Folio: 43, page: 30). By 1911, she is recorded as a widow (84 Elm Road, Portsmouth, Class: RG14, Piece: 5482, Schedule: 78).
FURMIDGE, Ann Elizabeth (I768)

69 Ann Eliza’s age varies on different sources. For example she is recorded as 22 years old on her marriage in 1872 but as 48 years old at the time of her death in 1894. The England census returns following her marriage (1881 & 1891) do not add any clarity. A review of baptism records for St Augustine’s, Liverpool provide some evidence that she was born in either 1852 or 1854 (assuming the correct child has been identified). CRUMMEY, Annie Eliza (I233)

70 Ann Eliza’s mother’s maiden name has been transcribed as Crombie in the GRO Birth Index but is written as Crummey in the baptism register. Ann Eliza is recorded as Ann Elizabeth [Latin: Anna Elizabetha] in her baptism record, as Eliza Ann Furmidge in the GRO Death Index and as Eliza Ann Furmedge in her burial record. She died aged 14 weeks. FURMEDGE, Ann Eliza (I443)

71 Ann was 13 days old when she died. FURMIDGE, Ann (I666)

72 Anna’s surname in the baptism register appears as Furmidge. Her surname is recorded as Furmidge in the GRO Marriage Index but as Furmadge in the transcript of the entry in the parish marriage register. Benjamin Oliver Wallis was a widower at the time of their marriage. FURMEDGE, Anna Maria (I327)

73 Anna’s surname is recorded as Fermidge in both the GRO Birth Index and on her birth certificate. Her father’s name is recorded as Lyon Fermidge (agricultural labourer) on her birth certificate and as Lionel Furmidge (labourer, deceased) on her death certificate. She died at 3, Ashton’s Yard, Nottingham, her mother Mary Furmidge, named as the informant, present at the death. FURMIDGE, Anna Elizabeth (I993)

74 Anne’s surname is recorded as Furmadge in her baptism record. The “Hampshire Baptisms” database includes her date of birth however this is not recorded on the Wootton bishops’ transcript of the baptism register. Either the date of birth was recorded on the original baptism register but not included on the bishops’ transcript or the date of birth has been taken from an unknown source. FURMIDGE, Anne (I866)

75 Annie Furmidge lived in Canada between 1924 and 1937, working as a domestic servant. The passenger list for 1937 also shows a 9 year old female child travelling back to England with Annie. Their intended address in England is that of Annie’s married sister Margaret May Crossland. (Board of Trade: Commercial and Statistical Department and Successors: Outwards Passenger Lists: Port: Liverpool (1924 January [part] to March [part]: BT27, Piece: 1043; Inwards Passenger Lists, 1937-1938, BT26, Piece: 1121; The National Archives). In 1939 Annie is recorded as a single woman, performing domestic duties, and living in the Hoyle household at 5 Heath Avenue, Halifax, Yorkshire (1939 Register: Class: RG101, Piece: 3403A. Note: Annie’s date of birth is recorded as the 14th (not the 17th) January 1898). FURMIDGE, Annie (I728)

76 Ann’s entry in the register of deaths indicate she is a married woman [sic.]. FURMIDGE, Ann (I1001)

77 Ann’s surname is recorded as Fermidge in the parish baptism register. FURMIDGE, Ann (I656)

78 Ann’s surname is recorded as Furmidge in the GRO Marriage Index but as Furmedge in the parish marriage register. FURMEDGE, Ann (I385)

79 Arthur’s surname is recorded as Furmidge in the GRO Birth Index.

The GRO marriage index entry for Arthur Loxley Furmedge (Q4 1908) records the registration district as Poplar, London and gives the volume number (1C) for that district. This appears to be an error as the parish marriage register shows that the marriage took place in Parkstone, Dorset which is in the Poole registration district. A search for Florence Elizabeth Jocelyn in the GRO marriage index appears to show the correct registration district (Poole, Dorset) and volume number (5A). Both references have been provided in the marriage source citation.

Arthur is last identified on the England census in 1891, age 11 and resident with his widowed mother in Station Road, Gillingham, Dorset (Class: RG12, Folio: 77, Page: 12). He appears to have married Florence Elizabeth Jocelyn in 1908 at Parkstone, Dorset however Florence is enumerated as “Florence Jocelyn”, a married woman, with her parents in the 1911 England census (Alcestor Road, Upper Parkstone, Dorset: Class: RG14, Piece: 12273, Schedule: 153). It is possible that the incorrect recording of her surname was accidental however the number of years married is also erroneously recorded as 23 years (the same number as her age), possibly instead of 3 years. It is believed that Florence died in 1918.

In 1898-1899, an Arthur L Furmedge, aged 19 and born in Dorset, absconded from the 6th Dragoon Guards in Aldershot, Hampshire and was subsequently court martialled (Sources: Police Gazette published 10 January 1899; District Court Martial Registers Reference: WO 86, Piece: 50, The National Archives). No further record has been identified that records the outcome.

In 1908, Arthur Loxley Furmedge is a witness to his mother’s second marriage to James Clark; another witness is James Charles Green who was also a witness to his mother’s first marriage to Henry Loxley Furmedge. Initial research suggests that James Charles Green was married to Hannah Ann Dowding’s sister (and was therefore Arthur Loxley Furmedge’s uncle by marriage). Note: his mother, Hannah Ann Clark (nee Dowding) was a witness to his marriage with Florence Elizabeth Jocelyn.

In 1909 a Loxley Furmedge (alias Charles Green), a grocer aged 31 years, is charged with stealing in Shepton Mallet, Somerset and is sentenced to 4 months hard labour. Whilst the court record gives his alias as Charles Green, newspaper reports of the event (erroneously?) note his alias as Brown; he is described as having “seen better days” (sources: Home Office Calendar of Prisoners, Reference: HO 140/276: 1909: Shropshire-Sussex (The National Archives); Wells Journal published 10th June 1909 and Central Somerset Gazette published 11th June 1909). It seems reasonable to assume that these records relate to the Arthur Loxley Furmedge who was the son of Henry Loxley Furmedge and Hannah Ann Dowding. As no further record can be found of Arthur it is possible that he emigrated or, given that he was already using an alias, that he changed his name. Note the similarity of the alias, Charles Green, to the name of his uncle-in-law, James Charles Green.

82 At the time of her marriage to Leslie Furmidge in 1980, Sylvia Joan Roberts had been previously married, her married surname being Widdowson. She had at least two children from her first marriage who are named as executors (step-children) in Leslie’s will, along with Leslie’s daughter from his own first marriage to Kathleen Heywood. ROBERTS, Sylvia Joan (I478)

83 Based on a review of the England census it seems likely that John William was in prison at Derby at the time of the 1901 census (Class: RG13, Piece: 3224, Folio: 186, Page: 4); his given name is recorded as William, born about 1872 in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, and his occupation as Iron Pipe Moulder. He is also recorded as William in the 1921 census but generally is recorded as John William in other census years. The year of birth is consistent and whilst the place of birth is not exact it is sufficiently close. His occupation is consistent with other census years.
A newspaper article published in the Sheffield Daily Telegraph on 9th March 1901 reports on the proceedings of the Alfreton Petty Sessions. This includes the case of John Foy and William Furmidge, furnace labourers at Clay Cross charged with assaulting Police Constable Turner on 2nd March. PC Turner had been taking John Foy, who was drunk, to the police station when Foy attacked him. Furmidge came to the rescue of Foy. Both were sentenced to one month hard labour at Derby prison.
FURMIDGE, John William (I454)

84 Based on a review of the GRO England & Wales Birth Index May and Richard George Constable had one child, a daughter, born in 1940. Richard died in 1945. By the time of May’s father’s death in 1951, May and her family were living in Singapore, Malaysia (“Deaths”, Portsmouth Evening News, 19 July 1951, Page 10). May’s re-marriage in 1948 is supported by a passenger list for the “Empire Windrush”, New Zealand Shipping Company Limited, sailing from Southampton to Singapore on 24th January 1951 which includes May Balloch, aged 32, a housewife, her 1 year old daughter (surname “Balloch”) and her 10 year old daughter (surname “Constable”), all of whom were previously resident at 25, Winchester Road, Buckland in Portsmouth (BT27, The National Archives accessed on www.findmypast.co.uk). FURMEDGE, May (I176)

85 Based on his parish marriage record and census returns, Samuel Honeywill was a member of the Royal Marine Artillery. There are two “Admiralty: Royal Marines: Registers of Service” records for him held by The National Archives:
1. Samuel Honeywill, Register No.: 1638, Division: Artillery, Enlisted: 18 May 1883 - this source records a birth date of 18 March 1861 at Ashburton, Devon. (ADM 159/22/1638)
2. Samuel Honeywill, Register No.: 5635 (former number 1638), Division: RM Artillery, Enlisted: 20 August 1895 - this source records a birth date of 17 December 1862 at Ashburton, Devon. (ADM 159/28/5635).
His date of birth in the 1939 Register is recorded as 17 December 1862.
HONEYWILL, Samuel (I157)

86 Based on Sydney and Minnie’s marriage record, Sydney was born in 1874 or 1875, his father was John Smith, a butcher, and Sydney was living in Andover, Hampshire. A review of the England census suggests Sydney’s parents were John and Jane Smith (nee Hunt) and that the family lived in South Street, Andover for the period of 1881 to 1901. In the 1901 England census, Sydney is living with his parents, his marital status “single” (Class: RG13, Piece: 1116, Folio: 27, Page:16). By 1911 (and also in 1921) he is a boarder with the Mills household at 49, Chantry Street, Andover (Class: RG14, Piece: 6344, Schedule: 255 & Class: RG15, Piece: 5851, Page: 104) and continues to describe himself as “single”. However, in the 1939 Register, which gives his date of birth as 07 January 1874, he is described as “married” (251 Vigo Road, Andover: Class: RG101, Piece: 2320E). “Minnie Smith” (nee Furmedge) could not be located in any census following her marriage, either cohabiting with Sydney or not. (See further notes for Minnie). SMITH, Sydney George (I380)

88 Bernard’s surname is recorded as Furnedge in the GRO Birth Index and his mother’s maiden name as Crumbey. His surname in the baptism register is recorded as Furmage and his mother’s maiden name as Cromby. His surname is recorded as Furnedge in the GRO Death Index and his burial record. FURMEDGE, Bernard (I236)

89 Bertha’s birth date is recorded as July 1881 in the 1900 US Federal Population Census but as 26 Jul 1880 in the Missouri Birth Index and US Social Security Death Index. Her gravestone also records a year of birth of 1880. TEMME, Bertha Minnie (I1009)

90 Bertha’s husband James Furmedge was a prisoner of war from 30th April 1941 until 1945. It is possible that she was informed or assumed that he had been killed because in July 1941 she appears to have married a Norwegian, [Living] Isachsen; whom she married a second time in June 1953, following the dissolution of her first marriage.

On 21 Feb 1956, a Mrs B M Isachsen (born 14 Nov 1916 and living at 53, Plymouth Street, Southsea, Portsmouth) travelled to Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, with two children born in 1941 and 1943. Both her’s and the children’s nationality is entered as Norwegian. Their intention was to reside in Australia. SAUNDERS, Bertha Miriam (I424)

91 Both the Kingston Cemetery register (G/BBK4/9, Page: 13) and a death notice published in the Portsmouth Evening News (06 December 1892) name Ann Elizabeth’s father as George Furmidge however her death certificate confirms her parents as James Furmidge (Stoker, Royal Navy) and R. E. Furmidge (informant; present at the death). Ann Elizabeth was 4 months old at the time of her death, so she was probably born in July 1892. Cause of death is recorded as “debility from birth”. FURMIDGE, Ann Elizabeth (I796)
