The 1861 Canada West Census records that Samuel Furmidge and Jane McGregor married in 1852. This record also shows a child, Sarah, born in Canada in about 1854. Whilst the country and place of marriage have not been established, based on this census data it appears likely that Samuel and Jane came to Canada independently and that they met and married in Canada.
The 1900 US Federal Population Census records Jane Furmidge as a widow, living with two of her children in North Tonawanda, Niagara County, New York. It records that she emigrated from Canada to the USA in 1888 and it seems likely that Samuel also emigrated with Jane around this time. Unfortunately the 1890 US Federal Population Census for Niagara county was destroyed by fire and so there is no confirmatory record (located to date) of an emigration year for Samuel. The 1900 US Federal Population Census also records that Samuel and Jane had 10 children of which 6 were alive in 1900.
The only record of Samuel’s death identified is a memorial at Sweeney Cemetery, North Tonawanda, Niagara County on the Find A Grave website. It records that he was “struck by a train”. | FURMIDGE, Samuel (I978)

It has not been possible to date to identify the 9th child that died in the GRO Birth Index or available parish baptism and burial records - for instance, it is possible that this was a stillborn child. The 1920 US Federal Population Census records Samuel’s year of emigration to the USA as 1888. For other family members this coincides with the year they joined the Brick Presbyterian Church, Rochester, New York however Samuel is not recorded as joining the church until 02 February 1890. Similarly, the 1920 US census records Samuel’s naturalisation year as 1896 however a transcript of his naturalisation card gives the date as 12 October 1900.
There are a number of discrepancies noted between the records of (A) Samuel Furmidge born in Canada to Samuel and Jane Furmidge, and (B) Samuel Furmidge living in USA and married to Bertha Temme:
Based on the 1871 and 1881 Canadian Census, Samuel Furmidge (A) was born about 1861. Samuel Furmidge (B) is located in the US Federal Census in 1910, and again in 1920, with a recorded age consistent with a birth year of 1865; His death certificate in 1923 however records his birth date as 04 March 1868. Samuel’s (B) wife, Bertha, was born in 1880 (or 1881) and it is possible that Samuel lowered his age to make the age difference appear to be less than it was.
Samuel Furmidge’s (A & B) birth country and that of his parents (assumed to be Samuel & Jane) is consistently recorded in both the noted Canadian and US census returns. Samuel’s (B) death certificate however records that he was born in Windsor, Ontario. This birth place is inconsistent with Samuel (A) whose parents are recorded in Wawanosh, Huron, Ontario in 1861 and in Nassagaweya, Halton, Ontario in 1871.
Samuel’s (B) death certificate does confirm that his father was named Samuel Furmidge, although it states he was born in Canada (not England); the maiden name of his mother is recorded as “not known” which is unhelpful and her birth country is recorded as Canada (not Scotland). It is possible that the informant providing the information for Samuel’s death certificate was unaware of some of Samuel’s biographical details, explaining any errors.
Presbyterian Church records and City Directories confirm that Samuel (A) emigrated from Canada to the USA with his family and record that he was a blacksmith (recorded on the 1881 Canadian Census and 1890 City Directory for Rochester, New York). His emigration year of 1888 recorded in the 1920 US Census (Samuel (B)) is consistent with that for other family members. Furmidge is not a common name in either Canada or the USA in this period.
Based on all available evidence it has been assumed that Samuel Furmidge (A) and (B) is the same person. A birth date of 04 March 1861 has been assigned based on his death certificate (04 March) and year of birth from the Canadian census (1861). A birth date of March 1868 would not have been possible given that his sister Catherine was born in August 1867.
Samuel became an inventor and has several patents awarded related to an improved wheel design, vehicle spring and recoil checks. In 1902 he is recorded as assigner to the Furmidge Spring Wheel Company of Pierre, South Dakota (his residence is recorded as St Louise, Missouri). In the 1920’s he was assignor for several companies based in Illinois. The Register also indicates that Vera re-married, changing her surname to Gabell. The marriage presumably took place after the death of John Harris Furmedge in 1943, however there is no entry in the GRO Marriage Index for Vera Furmedge. An entry in the National Probate Calendars 1948 for Vera Gabell (d. 14 Dec 1947) suggests her husband was Richard Henry Leigh Gabell. Amelia is the head of household in the 1921 England census; she is recorded as married but her husband, John Arthur Bentley, is not enumerated with her. The youngest child recorded on this census was born in 1913 (9 Croft Road, Upper Parkstone, Poole, Class: RG15, Piece: 10168, Schedule: 212). She is also enumerated, married, but without her husband in the 1939 Register (39, Croft Road, Poole, Dorset, Class: RG101, Piece: 6923E). In 1916 he is one of several men sworn in as special constables for B division at Bristol Police Court; the report notes that this was a condition of their exemption from Army service (Bristol Times and Mirror, published 22 July 1916, page: 5 Local War Items). Ellis enlisted with the Royal Welsh Regiment on 30 October 1915, aged 28 years. He transferred to the Army Reserve on 24 Jul 1916 and was discharged as no longer physically fit on 31 October 1918 (The National Archives: WO 363). The available records suggest that Frederick William Furmidge was sent to Canada as a ‘Home Child ‘ with Barnardo’s Homes in 1910. Entries for his marriage and death as well as information on his spouse have been added on this basis.
Frederick William Furmidge’s birth certificate identifies him as the illegitimate child of Kate Furmidge, a charwoman, living at 17, Albert Street, Ryde, Isle of Wight, Hampshire. He is present at this address in the 1901 England census (Class: RG13, Piece: 1025, Folio: 88, Page: 27) but cannot be traced in the 1911 England census. His older sister Alice Kate Furmidge is in a children’s home in 1911 whilst his younger brother, Ernest Reginald Furmidge, is enumerated in the household of his married aunt, Sarah Norris.
A Frederick Furmidge, aged 10 years old, sailed on the ship ‘Tunisian’ departing Liverpool, England on 10 March 1910 and arriving Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada on the 18 March 1910. He sailed with a party from Barnardo Homes, his final destination Toronto, Ontario, Canada. A William Furmidger, born 1900 in England is recorded in the 1911 Canadian census as a Barnardo boy, living with the Miller family at Muskoka, Ontario, Canada (Library & Archives Canada: T-20385).
In 1921, a Frederick William Furmidge married Alice Beatrice Harris at Muskoka Falls, Ontario. His marriage affidavit confirms that he was born at Cowes, England (i.e., Isle of Wight, Hampshire). He names his parents, however, as Frederick Furmidge (born: England) and Kathaline Hewitt. One possible explanation for his mother’s maiden-name is that Frederick’s aunt Caroline’s married name was Huitt which has been noted as mis-transcribed or recorded as Hewitt in some records; Frederick’s mother Kate married from her sister Caroline’s address in 1912 suggesting that the two sister’s were close.
A newspaper obituary for Matilda Maud Yates (formerly Harris), records that Matilda’s sister Mrs Alice Furmidge is living in Corbyville in 1960 (The Standard (St Catherines, Ontario, Canada), published 16 July 1960, Page 2: “Mrs Oscar Yates”, accessed on www.newspapers.com). Voter’s Lists for Hastings, Ontario confirm that Frederick William and Alice Furmidge lived in Corbyville from at least 1935 to at least 1974. Frederick is recorded as a (stationary) engineer, in 1963 as a foreman and by 1974 as retired. A son and his wife are also recorded. The Home Children Burial Index (transcript, www.findmypast.co.uk) suggests that a Frederick William Furmidge born 1900 is buried at Belleville Cemetery, Hastings County, Ontario, Canada. No death year is given. There are two possible memorials at nearby cemeteries (about 15km apart): (1) at Belleville Cemetery (Belleville, Hastings County): Frederick William Furmidge, born 1900 - death date blank, his wife Alice Beatrice Harris, 1904-1991 and her brother Frederick John Harris, 1901-1958; (2) at Elmwood Cemetery (Corbyville, Hastings County): Fred William Furmidge Sr. 1900-1988 and a daughter, Flora Kathleen 1922-1997. The son and wife noted in the Voter’s Lists for Corbyville are also buried at Elmwood Cemetery, Corbyville (grave memorials and images on www.findagrave.co.uk). Belleville Cemetery have confirmed that whilst a Frederick Furmidge owns the grave in which Alice Furmidge is buried, Frederick William Furmidge is not himself buried at Belleville Cemetery (email correspondence with cemetery, May 2025). | FURMIDGE, Frederick William (I844)

The baptism register (St Mark’s, St Helier, 1874) records Joseph Jeffery Furmedge’s date of birth as 28 January 1862 however he is recorded (as Joseph Geoffrey Furmedge) in the Superintendent Registrar St Helier Birth Index for the period covering 17-Aug-1860 to 30-Sep-1861 suggesting that he may have been born earlier. The entry in the 1861 Channel Islands census for his family includes Joseph Furmedge, born St Helier, Jersey age 2 months. As the 1861 census was take on 7th April 1861, this implies that Joseph was born Jan-Feb 1861 and it has been assumed that the correct date of birth is more likely 28 January 1861. The baptism register for St Peter, Redmile, Leicestershire shows a Sarah Furmidge daughter of Alice Furmidge, a single woman, baptised on 6th November 1831. Alice Furmidge born about 1814 to Robert and Dorothy Furmidge appears to be the most likely mother of this child based on the potential mother’s date of birth, marriage or death date and location. Alice would have been around 17 years old in 1831 and did not marry until 1838.
It has been assumed that Sarah died in infancy since she does not appear with her mother in the 1841 England census (Redmile, Leicestershire: Class: HO107, Piece: 588, Folio: 7, Page: 8). There are two possible burial dates in Redmile for a Sarah Furmidge, infant. The earliest of these (4th December 1831) has been assigned to Sarah Furmidge daughter of Alice Furmidge baptised 6th November 1831. Based on a culmination of other sources I believe her name is more likely to be Mary Jane Furmedge: In the newspaper report of her marriage she is referred to as “Miss May Furmedge, second daughter of the late Mr John Furmedge, of Ballarat”. She is referred to as “Mary Jane Light (wife of Arthur Kimber Light)” in her mother’s last will and testament.

The burial register entry for Mabel Ethel Jenkins records that a coroner’s inquest was performed, the details of which are reported by a number of newspapers including the Mansfield Reporter (published 19th January 1883). Mabel Ethel Jenkins was 8 weeks old when she died, her mother Elizabeth Ann had been feeding her principally on bread and milk. On the day of her death, Mabel was fed in the morning and then placed in her bed but shortly after was found dead. Both the mother and a neighbour reported that the child had appeared in good health. The results of a post mortem revealed that the child was fairly well nourished and had no marks of violence on her however there was undigested thick bread and milk in her stomach.
