Ellen (or Helen) Sarah Jane Chapman otherwise Simpson (formerly Furmidge) lived with William Henry Simpson at 72, Bassein Park Road, Hammersmith, London. They can be identified at this address in the 1911 and 1921 England census and in electoral rolls (entries for 1918 to 1930 noted). The 1911 England census records that they had been married for 16 years providing an approximate “marriage” date of 1895; they had no children (Class: RG14, Piece: 205, Schedule: 143). The 1911 census records that Ellen was born in Cape Colony, South Africa, whilst the 1921 census records her birth place more precisely as Grahamstown, South Africa (Class: RG15, Piece: 223, Schedule: 335). Ellen is recorded as both ‘Helen Sarah Jane Chapman’ and ‘Helen Sarah Jane Simpson’ in the GRO Death Index. Her death certificate confirms that she was the widow of Joseph Chapman, a Printer, whilst the informant was W. H. Simpson who was “causing the body to be buried”.
