- Elizabeth’s surname is recorded as Furmadge in the GRO Birth Index but as Furmage in her baptism register entry.
Elizabeth Furmage married Thomas Ryan in 1894 however no record can be found for them in any subsequent England and Wales census. In 1900, Elizabeth has a daughter, whose birth is registered with no father’s name and Elizabeth is using her maiden name of Furmage. Elizabeth is recorded as being a domestic servant. In the 1901 Wales census, Elizabeth and her daughter are residing with William Thomas (actually recorded a “Fredrick” Thomas in this census); their surname is recorded as Thomas and Elizabeth is recorded as William’s wife (6, Cardiff Road, Barry, Cardiff, Glamorganshire: Class: RG13, Piece: 4992, Folio: 29, Page: 2). In the 1911 Wales census William and Elizabeth Thomas are recorded as having been married for 12 years (about 1898-99) and having had one child together (15, Laura Street, Barry, Glamorganshire: Class: RG14, Piece: 32179, Schedule: 85). This perhaps indicates the start year of their relationship, as no marriage record can be found for them until 1913 for which Elizabeth is recorded with her previous married name of Ryan in the GRO Marriage Index.
