The 1939 Register records that Ellis was born 07 March 1891 however his entry in the GRO Death Index records that he died age 68 giving an approximate birth year of 1888 to 1889. His entry in the GRO Birth Index confirms he was born in 1888.

Ellis enlisted with the Royal Welsh Regiment on 30 October 1915, aged 28 years. He transferred to the Army Reserve on 24 Jul 1916 and was discharged as no longer physically fit on 31 October 1918 (The National Archives: WO 363). He was awarded a Silver War Badge (No. 505129) which was issued on 15 July 1920 (The National Archives, Silver War Badge Roll RG WO 329, 2958-3255).
