- William Furmage married Marina Freeman at Bridport, Dorset in 1843. They were both resident in Bridport at the time of the marriage. William’s occupation is recorded as Weaver and his father as Moses Furmage, Flax Draper. Marina’s father is recorded as Richard Freeman. The couple can be located in the 1851 England census, with three children, living in East Street, Bridport, Dorset; William is a Sail Cloth Weaver (Class: HO107, Piece: 1861, Folio: 321, Page: 30).
In the 1861 England census, Marina Furmage and her three children are enumerated with Marina’s parents; her husband William is not present however Marina is recorded as married (East Street, Bridport, Dorset, Class: RG9, Piece: 1367, Folio: 104, Page: 18). In the 1871 England census, Marina is enumerated with her married daughter Louisa Prior [sic. Pryor]; Marina is now recorded as a widow (East Street, Bridport, Dorset, Class: RG10, Piece: 2028, Folio: 106, Page: 20). A death or burial record has not been located for her husband William Furmage for the period between 1851 and 1871.
In 1857, a William Firmedge married Margaret Farmer at Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland. There are a number of discrepancies compared with the William Furmage who married Marina Freeman, but also some similarities. His recorded age of 30 years suggests a later birth year of 1826-7, he is single, and his father is recorded as Richard (not Moses) Firmedge. His occupation however is recorded as Weaver and his father’s as Flax Draper. Additionally, his mother is recorded as Mary Firmedge, formerly Clark [or Black], deceased. William and Margaret can be traced in the Scotland census for 1861 (surname Fermidge; Nicol Street, Abbotshall, Kirkcaldy, Reference: 442/32/8) and 1871 (surname Furmadge; Quality Street, Abbotshall, Kirkcaldy, Reference: 442/21/19). In both census years, William is recorded as being born in England and his occupation as Weaver. His age in 1861 suggests the later birth year of 1826-7 however in 1871 his age suggests an earlier birth year of 1820-21. William Firmedge died in 1875. In his death record he is described as a Linen Weaver, married to Margaret Farmer. The term “(illegitimate)” is recorded after the name of his wife, however it is not clear if this is referring to William’s birth or his marriage. The former seems more likely as the column recording his parents’ names only records a mother, Betsy Firmedge (deceased). The informant on the death certificate is his son, William Firmedge.
A tentative conclusion suggests that the William Furmage who married Marina Freeman in 1843, but who then “disappeared’ sometime after 1851, is the same man as the William Firmedge who married Margaret Farmer in 1857 and who died in 1875.
