  • Notes 
    • Frederick’s surname is recorded as Furmedge in the GRO Birth Index and as Furmidge is his baptism register entry. His date of birth is recorded as 06 August 1883 in his Royal Navy Service Record however this date is inconsistent with his entry in the GRO Birth Index and his date of baptism. A date of birth of 05 November 1882 is recorded in his merchant seaman records (CR1 form: The National Archives: BT349) and seems more likely.

      Frederick joined the Royal Navy as a Boy Second Class on 15 February 1899, initially serving on “Boscowen” (the 1939 Register entry for his family suggests this was also the name he later gave to his residence on Redlands Lane, Fareham, Hampshire). He served on various ships rising through the ranks to become Petty Officer First Class. He passed for Gunner on 03 February 1908, was promoted to Acting Gunner First Class on 08 December 1910 and confirmed as a commissioned officer (Rank: Warrant Officer; Role: Gunner) on 14 December 1911. He retired from the Royal Navy on 18 July 1924. He appears to have then worked in the merchant service but was re-called to the Royal Navy at the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939 until reverted to retirement for health reasons on 19 November 1943. There is a note in his records that he was particularly troubled by the loss of his son in action.
