• Notes

  Samuel Grigg was the younger brother of Emma Grigg, who married Mary Jane’s brother Frederick William Furmadge. Samuel served in the Royal Navy from January 1910 to March 1932 achieving the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He was re-called at the outbreak of war in 1939 and served until invalided in September 1944 (The National Archives: Royal Navy Registers of Seamen’s Services ADM 188 / 991 / 1660 & ADM 188 / 1022 / 2466; Royal Navy and Royal Marine Service and Pension Records, ADM 363 / 453 / 139). A death record for Samuel has not been found. He is the executor named in his wife’s 1964 probate record suggesting he died in 1964 or later. A newspaper article relating to the Grigg family records that his younger brother Stanley Grigg was the last surviving son providing a latest year of death for Samuel of 2001 (Portsmouth Evening News articles published 28 July 2001 and 11 September 2003).
