- Walter does not appear in any census enumerated with his wife Eleanor following their marriage. In the 1891 England Census Eleanor is living in Grove Hill, Beverley, Yorkshire and is recorded as married. By 1901 she has moved to Corn Market Hill, Howden, Yorkshire and is recorded as a widow. She has one daughter born in 1886 (1891 Reference: Class: RG12, Piece: 3909, Folio: 31, Page: 15. 1901 Reference: RG13, Piece: 4458, Folio:44, Page: 5). This implies that Walter may have died some time between 1885 and 1901.
Walter is recorded as 24 years old in the parish marriage register suggesting a birth year of about 1861. (It should be noted that whilst his surname is recorded as CROFT in both the GRO Marriage Index and parish marriage entry, his wife is recorded as Eleanor CRAFT in post-marriage sources). There is no entry in the GRO Birth Index for either a Walter Croft or Walter Craft born between 1859 and 1862 in Beverley, Hull or Sculcoates Registration Districts however there is an entry for a Walter Craft born in the Hull Registration District in 1864.
Walter is recorded as a bachelor at the time of his marriage, his occupation as printer and his father as Henry Croft, corn carrier. Emily Croft is one of the witnesses. A baptism record for the Walter Craft identified born in 1864 records his parents as Henry Craft, a corn carrier, and Elizabeth. Henry and Elizabeth also have a daughter Emily born in 1862. In the 1881 England Census, Walter Craft is enumerated with his parents Henry and Elizabeth, his occupation is recorded as printer (Craft Household, 5, Clappison Square, Sculcoates, Yorkshire: Class: RG11, Piece: 4757, Folio: 77, Page: 13). This appears to confirm that the Walter Craft born in 1864 is also the Walter Craft who married Eleanor Furmage (formerly Rose) in 1885.
There is a GRO Death Index entry for a Walter Craft, aged 31, registered in the Hull Registration District in 1893. This again suggests a year of birth of 1861-2 (not 1864). The death certificate however confirms that this is the same Walter Craft born in 1864 to Henry and Elizabeth Craft. Walter died at Hull Royal Infirmary of “Bright Syncope”. The informant is his father, Henry Craft, whose address (5, Clappison Square) matches that of Henry and Elizabeth Craft in the 1881 (and 1891) England census.
