Elizabeth is recorded in the 1861 Scotland census as the step-daughter of William Furmage; her surname is recorded as Farmer suggesting that she is the illegitimate daughter of William’s wife, Margaret (Fermidge Household, Nicol Street, Abbotshall, Kirkcaldy, Fife; Reference: 442/32/8). Based on the timing of her birth (1851-2) it seems unlikely that she was William’s biological daughter. Whilst in her death registration record her father is recorded as William Firmage, this may be a reflection of how the family unit was perceived by its’ members rather than evidence of her paternity; the informant is her step brother John Firmage.

Elizabeth’s date of birth is recorded on her death registration record as 30 August 1852. It states that she was born in Fifeshire, Scotland which is supported by the 1861 Scotland census. Her birth was prior to statutory registration in Scotland; no birth or baptism record has been found for an Elizabeth Farmer, born in 1852, Fifeshire, in parish records available online.

Elizabeth married John Main McBride on 29 March 1893 at Logan, Cache, Utah, USA. The marriage record (transcript only) gives Elizabeth’s surname as Nielson (not Farmer) however no evidence of a previous marriage was found (Western States Marriage Records, transcript accessed on the BYU-Idaho Special Collections website: https://archives.byui.edu/family-history/). An Elizabeth Nelson was born in Kinghorn, Fifeshire, Scotland to Alexander Nelson and Margaret Farmer on 20 Sep 1851. A marriage record for Alexander Nelson and Margaret Farmer could not be found (online records only).

The place of birth of Elizabeth Farmer is recorded as Kinghorn, Fife in the 1861 Scotland census (see reference above) and Margaret Farmer (later wife of William Furmage) and her family were living in Kinghorn, Fifeshire at the time of the 1851 Scotland census (Farmer household, Overgate East Side, Kinghorn, Kirkcaldy, Fife; Reference: 439/5/1). An Elizabeth Farmer could not be located in the 1871 Scotland census (she didn’t emigrate until 1880) however an Eliza Neilson, born about 1851-52 at Kinghorn, Fife is lodging with Janet Farmer at High street, Abbotshall, Kirkcaldy, Fife in 1871 (Reference: 442/27/9). It therefore seems possible that Elizabeth Farmer, step-daughter to William Furmage in the 1861 Scotland census was actually born Elizabeth Nelson in 1851 to Alexander Nelson and Margaret Farmer.
