• Notes

  Joseph’s parish baptism register entry records his date of birth as 25 April 1899, however his entry in the Register of Seamen, Special Index, Alphabetical Series (The National Archives, BT 350 / CR 10) records his date of birth as 24 April 1899. A similar anomaly is seen with his twin brother, James, however in that case there is other supporting evidence that 24 April 1899 is correct. As James was born at 2.45AM (source: birth certificate) it seems unlikely that Joseph could have been born on the 25 April (and James on the 24 April) e.g., if they had been born either side of midnight. There is no entry in the GRO Online Index for the birth of Joseph Furmedge (an error has been reported) although an entry is recorded in the older indexes available on e.g., www.findmypast.co.uk and www.ancestry.co.uk. A copy of the birth certificate is required to resolve this anomaly. In the meantime it is assumed that 24 April 1899 is correct. Joseph’s marriage to Margaret Baines has been recorded on both his and her baptism register entries. No death record has been identified for Joseph however his father’s obituary notice in the Liverpool Echo names his living children and Joseph is not listed. It has therefore been assumed that he died prior to 1951.
