  • Notes
    • George Walter Thornbury (1828 – 1876) was an author and journalist, making contributions to the ‘Athenaeum’ and to Charles Dickens’ later volumes of ‘Household Words’ and ‘All the Year Round’ as well as writing independent works such as his ‘Life of J.M.W. Turner’ and various novels.
He was born in London on 13th November 1828, the son of a solicitor, and educated at Cheam, Surrey. He initially worked in Bristol, where he gained a reputation as a versifier, biographer, and author of historical and topographical sketches. He returned to London before 1851, where he joined the staff of the ‘Athenaeum’ and soon after became a contributor to Charles Dickens’ works. During this time, he travelled widely, writing articles on the United States and Palestine, the Iberian Peninsula and European Turkey. Later in life he engaged largely in art criticism and the writing of novels.
He married Harriett Furmedge on 7th October 1873 at St Andrews, Holborn, London. They had three sons: George Herbert (b. 1874), Edward Spencer (b. 1875) and George Walter (b.1876).
He died on 11th June 1876, of overwork, at Camberwell House Asylum, Peckham Road, London. He was buried 13th June 1876 at Nunhead cemetery.
