  Arthur’s surname is recorded as Furmidge in the GRO Birth Index. The GRO marriage index entry for Arthur Loxley Furmedge (Q4 1908) records the registration district as Poplar, London and gives the volume number (1C) for that district. This appears to be an error as the parish marriage register shows that the marriage took place in Parkstone, Dorset which is in the Poole registration district. A search for Florence Elizabeth Jocelyn in the GRO marriage index appears to show the correct registration district (Poole, Dorset) and volume number (5A). Both references have been provided in the marriage source citation. Arthur is last identified on the England census in 1891, age 11 and resident with his widowed mother in Station Road, Gillingham, Dorset (Class: RG12, Folio: 77, Page: 12). He appears to have married Florence Elizabeth Jocelyn in 1908 at Parkstone, Dorset however Florence is enumerated as “Florence Jocelyn”, a married woman, with her parents in the 1911 England census (Alcestor Road, Upper Parkstone, Dorset: Class: RG14, Piece: 12273, Schedule: 153). It is possible that the incorrect recording of her surname was accidental however the number of years married is also erroneously recorded as 23 years (the same number as her age), possibly instead of 3 years. It is believed that Florence died in 1918. In 1898-1899, an Arthur L Furmedge, aged 19 and born in Dorset, absconded from the 6th Dragoon Guards in Aldershot, Hampshire and was subsequently court martialled (Sources: Police Gazette published 10 January 1899; District Court Martial Registers Reference: WO 86, Piece: 50, The National Archives). No further record has been identified that records the outcome. In 1908, Arthur Loxley Furmedge is a witness to his mother’s second marriage to James Clark; another witness is James Charles Green who was also a witness to his mother’s first marriage to Henry Loxley Furmedge. Initial research suggests that James Charles Green was married to Hannah Ann Dowding’s sister (and was therefore Arthur Loxley Furmedge’s uncle by marriage). Note: his mother, Hannah Ann Clark (nee Dowding) was a witness to his marriage with Florence Elizabeth Jocelyn. In 1909 a Loxley Furmedge (alias Charles Green), a grocer aged 31 years, is charged with stealing in Shepton Mallet, Somerset and is sentenced to 4 months hard labour. Whilst the court record gives his alias as Charles Green, newspaper reports of the event (erroneously?) note his alias as Brown; he is described as having “seen better days” (sources: Home Office Calendar of Prisoners, Reference: HO 140/276: 1909: Shropshire-Sussex (The National Archives); Wells Journal published 10th June 1909 and Central Somerset Gazette published 11th June 1909). It seems reasonable to assume that these records relate to the Arthur Loxley Furmedge who was the son of Henry Loxley Furmedge and Hannah Ann Dowding. As no further record can be found of Arthur it is possible that he emigrated or, given that he was already using an alias, that he changed his name. Note the similarity of the alias, Charles Green, to the name of his uncle-in-law, James Charles Green.
