- Following her husband’s death, Jane Furmedge continued for a short time as Inn Keeper of the Bell & Crown Inn, High Street, Winchester (in addition to Carrier & Coal Merchant) as evidenced by an advert paced in the Hampshire Chronicle by Jane and published 23 December 1848. The 1851 England census however describes her as a Retired Innkeeper (Class: HO17, Piece: 1674, Folio: 233, Page: 3) and the 1861 England census records no occupation (Class: RG9, Piece: 691, Folio: 21, Page: 33). By 1871, she was an inmate at St John’s Hospital, Winchester, where she died in 1878 ([1] 1871 England census: Class: RG10, Piece: 1211, Folio: 10, Page: 51. Note: her surname is recorded as Furmadge. [2] Death Certificate).
