- Ellen’s surname is recorded as Furmidge in the GRO Marriage Index but appears as Furmedge in the parish marriage register.
It appears that Ellen’s husband, Charles Isaac Hill, had died on or after November 1854 (see notes for Charles Isaac Hill) and that Ellen had moved to London, where a daughter Anne Ellen Hill was baptised in August 1854. In 1857 Amy Gibson Hill was born in Croydon, Surrey. The baptism, which did not occur until 1873, names the parents as John and Ellen Hill; the birth certificate records the parents as Charles Hill and Ellen Hill (formerly Furmedge).
In the 1861 and 1871 England census, an Ellen Hill of the correct age and place of birth is living with John Hill (a widower) and is described as his “aunt” and her status as “married”. John Hill, widower, and Ellen Hill, widow (father: William Furmedge, Hotel Keeper) were married at Kensington, London on 10th November 1873. An entry in the 1881 census was not found however in the 1891 England census, John and Ellen Hill are recorded as married; Amy Gibson Hill is also recorded at the same address. Amy Gibson Hill married Frank Harvey in 1900 and her father is recorded in the marriage register as John Hill (deceased). John had died in 1893 and is buried in Brompton Cemetery in the same plot as his first wife, Emma Hill (late Beattie, formerly Taylor) who died in 1850 and Ellen Hill (late Hill, formerly Furmedge) who died in 1907.
