- George Edward Pope was born in Charters Towers, and entered the firm of Gelling Brothers, in that city, to learn the coach building trade. Then in 1923, he joined with his two brothers to form Pope Brothers at South Townsville, Queensland. He married Miss Emma Rose Furmedge in 1915 and they had 5 children.
