| Notes |
- Based on a review of the England census it seems likely that John William was in prison at Derby at the time of the 1901 census (Class: RG13, Piece: 3224, Folio: 186, Page: 4); his given name is recorded as William, born about 1872 in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, and his occupation as Iron Pipe Moulder. He is also recorded as William in the 1921 census but generally is recorded as John William in other census years. The year of birth is consistent and whilst the place of birth is not exact it is sufficiently close. His occupation is consistent with other census years.
A newspaper article published in the Sheffield Daily Telegraph on 9th March 1901 reports on the proceedings of the Alfreton Petty Sessions. This includes the case of John Foy and William Furmidge, furnace labourers at Clay Cross charged with assaulting Police Constable Turner on 2nd March. PC Turner had been taking John Foy, who was drunk, to the police station when Foy attacked him. Furmidge came to the rescue of Foy. Both were sentenced to one month hard labour at Derby prison.
