  • Notes
    • A note has been added to Thomas’ burial record: “This child died of burns from fire [lighters] in the fields whilst he was employed scaring birds.” An inquest was held and reported in the Leicester Journal published 16th April 1858: Thomas had been employed as a bird scarer by R. Birch. He had been with his brother John and they had made a fire to “warm themselves and get their dinner by”. They thought that they had put the fire out but then Thomas sat down in the embers, and when the brothers left and were walking across the field, he realised that his clothes had caught fire. His cry brought Mr Birch into the field and both he and John had tried to put the fire out. A surgeon was called and attended Thomas at his home but he died in the night. A verdict of accidental death was given.
