| Notes |
- Catherine appears in a number of news articles in 1929. In August it is reported that Catherine applied for an affiliation order against George Knight, which was heard at the Nottingham Shire Hall. According to the report, Catherine had met Knight in 1927, believing him to be a single man named Jack Morris. Catherine had told Knight when they met that she was already an unmarried mother however this had not put him off and both her brother and mother heard him propose marriage to Catherine, although this did not go ahead. In February 1928 Catherine had heard a rumour he was already a married man, which her mother discovered to be true, however Catherine continued her relationship with him leading to the birth of a child in September 1928. This situation had resulted in Catherine leaving her parents home. Knight was ordered to pay 5s a week for 16 years as well as £1 1s towards birth expenses.
Catherine was back in the news in October this time however she was sent to prison for 6 weeks as a result of deserting her child and leaving it chargeable to the Basford Guardians. Evidence was given by Catherine’s mother that Catherine had tried to leave the child with her parents but as they already took care of her first illegitimate child, they had refused. Evidence was also given that the child had been privately fostered for a while, Catherine agreeing to pay the foster mother maintenance. Ultimately however Catherine’s mother had obtained an “admittance order” for the child to be taken to Basford. George Knight, the child’s father, was also brought to court. He had not kept up the payments due to Catherine as he was no longer in work. He was ordered to pay the money due to the Poor Law Authorities.
