  • Notes 
    • Claude Lee Furmidge joined the Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment (“The Sherwood Foresters”) on 14th July 1915 and was deployed in France. He reached the rank of Lance Corporal and then transferred to the Royal Leicestershire Regiment. He was finally transferred to the Labour Corps in February 1917 and raised to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant (Sources: World War I Medal Rolls Index Cards; Service Medal & Award Rolls; Supplement to the London Gazette). In October 1915, the Melton Mowbray Times published a report that Claude had been wounded whilst in France and only a few weeks after being deployed (Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette, 01 October 1915, Page: 3, “Local soldier wounded”).
      Claude was also injured in 1934 when it is reported he was knocked down by a motor car whilst alighting from a tram on his way how from work late one evening. He suffered fractures to his thigh and lower right leg (The Nottingham Evening Post published 31 May 1934, Page: 5, “Another Mansfield Road Mishap”).
