    • Alice Furmidge married William Henry James in 1890. She is enumerated, as Alice James, a married woman, with her parents in the 1891 England census (13, Highland Road, St Helens, Isle of Wight: Class: RG12, Piece: 892, Folio: 68, Page: 9); her husband is not enumerated in the same household. The 1901 England census records an Alice Sandy, married woman, living in the same Furmidge household as enumerated in 1891; Alice is recorded as the daughter and is the correct age to be Alice James (formerly Furmidge). There is also a Willie Sandy, age 3 and born in Portsmouth, enumerated in the same household (17, Albert Street, Ryde, Isle of Wight: Class: RG13, Piece: 1025, Folio: 88, Page: 27).

      An Alice Maud Furmidge married William Sandy in 1893 at the Registry Office, Medway, Kent. Her age is recorded as 21 years (born 1871-2) making her slightly younger than expected and she is also recorded as a spinster. Her residence is the same as William Sandy’s at 23, River Street, Brompton. Her father is recorded as James Furmidge, a labourer. This is the only marriage record identified that can explain the entry for Alice Sandy (above) in the 1901 England census (and a corresponding birth / baptism record for an Alice Maud Furmidge born 1871-2 to a James Furmidge has not to date been found) suggesting that this marriage record relates to Alice Furmidge born 1868 to James Furmidge and Mary Ann Heath.

      Supportive of this conclusion is the record of death for Alice Maud Sandy in 1905 at Warwick Street, Ryde, Isle of Wight.
