Ernest Reginald Furmidge is enumerated in the household of his married aunt Sarah Norris in the 1911 England census (Regge Firmage, nephew, at 14, Pitt Street, Ryde, Isle of Wight, Class: RG14, Piece: 5722, Schedule: 258). He cannot be located in the 1921 England census. He emigrated to Germany some time prior to 1939. An Ernst Furmidge born 27 Feb 1905 at “Wight” and his wife Maria (maiden-name Gunther; born 15 August 1905) are recorded as resident at Beckum (Northern Germany), in the British occupation zone, until and on the 3 Sep 1939. Additional information regarding their son confirms Ernst’s full name as Ernst Reginald Furmidge (Registration of Foreigners and German Persecutees: British Zone: digital images accessed on www.arolsen-archives.org, Arolsen Archives, Bad Arolsen, Germany).

One possible but not proven link to Ernest’s emigration to Germany and residence at Beckum relates to his mother’s marriage to Hermann Wippermann, a German resident living in England in 1912. Preliminary research suggests Hermann’s family originated from the area near Beckum and it is possible therefore that Hermann, his new wife Kate, and her son Ernest emigrated to Germany some time after 1912.
