• Notes

  Based on Sydney and Minnie’s marriage record, Sydney was born in 1874 or 1875, his father was John Smith, a butcher, and Sydney was living in Andover, Hampshire. A review of the England census suggests Sydney’s parents were John and Jane Smith (nee Hunt) and that the family lived in South Street, Andover for the period of 1881 to 1901. In the 1901 England census, Sydney is living with his parents, his marital status “single” (Class: RG13, Piece: 1116, Folio: 27, Page:16). By 1911 (and also in 1921) he is a boarder with the Mills household at 49, Chantry Street, Andover (Class: RG14, Piece: 6344, Schedule: 255 & Class: RG15, Piece: 5851, Page: 104) and continues to describe himself as “single”. However, in the 1939 Register, which gives his date of birth as 07 January 1874, he is described as “married” (251 Vigo Road, Andover: Class: RG101, Piece: 2320E). “Minnie Smith” (nee Furmedge) could not be located in any census following her marriage, either cohabiting with Sydney or not.
