1939 Register (RG101-2630I) records George’s year of birth as 1914 (25 Sep) however the GRO Birth Index registration is for Oct-Dec 1913. His Royal Engineers Tracer Card supports a date of birth of 25 Sep 1913. | FURMEDGE, George Charles (I174)

A baptism or parish marriage register entry was not found for Joseph Furmedge however his marriage to Margaret Livingstone is recorded in her baptism register entry.
The GRO Death Index and burial record for Joseph Furmedge state that he was 30 years old when he died which would give an approximate year of birth of 1916, rather than 1914 (confirmed by his birth certificate). The burial record indicates that Joseph was living at 1, Springfield Place, Liverpool. Margaret Furmedge, also aged 30 years, is buried a few days later in the same cemetery and grave and previously of the same address. In the 1939 Register, Margaret Livingstone (married name: Furmedge) is living with her family at 1, Springfield Place, Liverpool. | FURMEDGE, Joseph (I248)

A fourth child, Mary Ann Furmidge, is recorded in the 1851 England census, aged 2 years old and possibly therefore a twin of Samuel, however this child appears in no other record found to date (Redmile, Leicestershire: Class: HO107, Piece: 2102, Folio: 349, Page: 6). | FURMIDGE, Robert (I697)

A marriage record has not been located for Albert Perry Furmidge and Mary Binfield Edkins. Their eldest child was born in 1879 and, assuming a marriage occurred, an approximate marriage date of “before 1879” has been assigned. | FURMIDGE, Albert Perry (I1042)

A note has been added to Thomas’ burial record: “This child died of burns from fire [lighters] in the fields whilst he was employed scaring birds.” An inquest was held and reported in the Leicester Journal published 16th April 1858: Thomas had been employed as a bird scarer by R. Birch. He had been with his brother John and they had made a fire to “warm themselves and get their dinner by”. They thought that they had put the fire out but then Thomas sat down in the embers, and when the brothers left and were walking across the field, he realised that his clothes had caught fire. His cry brought Mr Birch into the field and both he and John had tried to put the fire out. A surgeon was called and attended Thomas at his home but he died in the night. A verdict of accidental death was given. | FURMIDGE, Thomas (I488)

A teacher by occupation, John Roscoe enlisted in the Royal Signals as a Private on 30th October 1941. He transferred to the Intelligence Corps in November 1942 and was employed at GHQ for several months in charge of the wartime education for the 1500 “other ranks” of the Unit. From January 1943 to April 1946 he served in India. He was discharged from the army on 12th July 1946 with the rank of Sergeant. (Source: Service Records of J. A William Sandy married Alice Maud Furmidge in 1893 at the Register Office, Medway, Kent. He is recorded as 22 years old (born 1870-71) and a bachelor. His occupation is Stoker, Royal Navy and his father is William Henry Sandy, a labourer. His residence is River Street, Brompton which was in the Chatham area near the Royal Navy docks.
William’s Royal Navy service record gives his date and place of birth as 13 June 1871, Rotherhithe, London. This is consistent with his age as recorded on his marriage record. Rotherhithe (London / Surrey) was in the St Olave (Southwark / Bermondsey) registration district from 1870. William joined the Royal Navy as a stoker in 17 October 1892. He was invalided due to an “old injury to his right hand” between 03 July 1896 and 07 Oct 1899 and ended his service on 09 August 1901.
Alice Maud Sandy (formerly Furmidge) died in 1905 on the Isle of Wight. In 1906, a William Boyd Sandy married Rosey Ellen Furmidge at the Register Office in Portsmouth, Hampshire. He is recorded as 32 years old (born 1873-74) and a widower. His occupation is Mariner (Merchant Service) and his residence (the same as Rosey’s) is at 14, Eastfield Road, Eastney. His father is recorded as William Henry Sandy (deceased), an army pensioner.
His Merchant Service Identity Certificate (C.R. 10 Form; The National Archives: BT350) gives his date and place of birth as 13 June 1874, London (this is further clarified as Bermondsey, London in the 1911 England census (Cross Street, Cowes, Isle of Wight. Class: RG14, Piece: 5689, Schedule: 52)). In 1907 he is recorded as the master of ’Surprise’ (former master: J. Furmidge) and he appears on other merchant navy crew lists (Crew List Index Project (CLIP) website). The 1921 England census shows him as engineer on board the ‘Media Hyr’ at anchor on the Hamble River, Southampton (Class: RG15, Piece: 05687).
An entry in the GRO Birth Index has not been found for a William BOYD Sandy born 1870 to 1875 anywhere in England, nor has a first marriage been identified for William BOYD Sandy. Based on the information above it seems likely that William Sandy, widower of Alice Maud Furmidge, and William Boyd Sandy, widowed groom of Rosey Ellen Furmidge are the same person. Both dates of birth have been cited as a GRO Birth Index entry has not been identified for either.
An inquest was held at the Congregational Schoolroom, Cowes into the death of William Boyd Sandy, age 70. He suffered a crushed chest when he was accidentally run down by a train from which he was alighting at Cowes Bay Station on 7th October 1944 (Isle of Wight Family History Society transcript). | SANDY, William (I1062)

Ada’s year of birth recorded on the GRO Death Index is 1895 however other sources including the 1939 Register and her burial record suggest that she was born in 1897. In addition her date of burial in the parish register has been over-written to correct it - the entry could be read as 11th July 1972. | HILL, Ada Maria Kate (I672)

Albert Furmidge died aged 19 years old at Nottingham General Hospital as a result of complications from appendicitis. He had attended Stapleford Boys’ School and been a member of the Stapleford Group of Sea Scouts. At the time of his death he was employed by Messrs. Jones, Stroud, Ltd., Long Eaton. His funeral took place on Tuesday 6th October 1936 at Stapleford Cemetery. (Source: The Long Eaton Advertiser published 9th October 1936). | FURMIDGE, Albert (I471)

Alexander Huitt enlisted in the Militia at Attleborough, Norfolk on 28 July 1888. His birth place has been erroneously recorded as Attleborough, Norfolk; this is where he was living at the time; later records record his birth place as London. His civilian occupation is recorded as baker. He was based in Kinghorn, Scotland in the first half of the 1890’s where he and Caroline had four of their children. He served in South Africa from 31 March 1900 to 06 November 1901 and in Bermuda from the 07 November 1901 to 30 November 1902. He was mentioned in despatches for gallant conduct in the field and awarded a number of medals for his services in South Africa. He was also awarded the Silver Medal for “Long Service and Good Conduct”. He was discharged at Hull, Yorkshire on 21 September 1909 with the rank of Company Sergeant Major of the Royal Garrison Artillery. He appears to have signed up again on 23 August 1915 to 24 May 1919 but there are no overseas actions noted in his record for this period (The National Archives: WO 96 / 1411 / 13 & WO 364). | HUITT, Alexander Henry Pegg (I784)

Alfred Warman Edwards was a teacher. “He was head of the Harby C.E. School for many years, as well as being churchwarden, clerk to the parish council and the “Grantham Journal” correspondent.” (Grantham Journal published 01 March 1963, “Death in Kent of Mrs G. Edwards”). | EDWARDS, Alfred Warman (I583)
|
35 |
Alfred’s year of birth is recorded as 1911 in the 1939 Register however his birth was registered in the April-June quarter of 1910 and his entry in the GRO Death Index records confirms his date of birth as 03 May 1910. | WARING, Alfred (I627)

Alice Furmidge married William Henry James in 1890. She is enumerated, as Alice James, a married woman, with her parents in the 1891 England census (13, Highland Road, St Helens, Isle of Wight: Class: RG12, Piece: 892, Folio: 68, Page: 9); her husband is not enumerated in the same household. The 1901 England census records an Alice Sandy, married woman, living in the same Furmidge household as enumerated in 1891; Alice is recorded as the daughter and is the correct age to be Alice James (formerly Furmidge). There is also a Willie Sandy, age 3 and born in Portsmouth, enumerated in the same household (17, Albert Street, Ryde, Isle of Wight: Class: RG13, Piece: 1025, Folio: 88, Page: 27).
An Alice Maud Furmidge married William Sandy in 1893 at the Registry Office, Medway, Kent. Her age is recorded as 21 years (born 1871-2) making her slightly younger than expected and she is also recorded as a spinster. Her residence is the same as William Sandy’s at 23, River Street, Brompton. Her father is recorded as James Furmidge, a labourer. This is the only marriage record identified that can explain the entry for Alice Sandy (above) in the 1901 England census (and a corresponding birth / baptism record for an Alice Maud Furmidge born 1871-2 to a James Furmidge has not to date been found) suggesting that this marriage record relates to Alice Furmidge born 1868 to James Furmidge and Mary Ann Heath.
Supportive of this conclusion is the record of death for Alice Maud Sandy in 1905 at Warwick Street, Ryde, Isle of Wight. | FURMIDGE, Alice (I782)

Alice Furmidge was a registered nurse having trained at the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary between 1942 and 1945; she was registered as a nurse on 7th June 1945 (Register of Nurses, Royal College of Nursing, General Nursing Council for England & Wales, London, 1946, Entry for Alice Furmidge of Police House, Walton-on-Trent, Burton-on-Trent). The 1952 Electoral Register for Cheltenham, Gloucestershire shows her resident at “Dudley”, Pilford Avenue, Cheltenham. | FURMIDGE, Alice (I479)

Alice Kate is enumerated at St Andrew’s Home for Girls, St Simon’s Road, Southsea in the 1911 England census, aged 14 years (Class: RG14, Piece: 5554, Schedule: 359). This children’s home was transferred to The Waifs and Strays’ Society in 1908 and moved from Victoria Road to St Simon’s Road, Southsea, in 1911. It accommodated girls aged 7 to 14 years who were taught domestic skills which at 14 years old included cooking and laundry. The home had an ‘excellent reputation for producing happy and fun-loving girls’ (information accessed on Hidden Lives Revealed, https://www.hiddenlives.org.uk/homes/, 02 May 2025). By 1921, Alice appears to be in domestic service in Hull, Yorkshire (Class: RG15, Piece: 23744, Schedule: 203) and by 1939 she is a working as a maid and living in Bournemouth (Class: RG101, Piece: 2229A). Her date of birth is recorded as 11 Dec 1897 (not 1896) in the 1939 Register however her birth certificate confirms the year as 1896. | FURMIDGE, Alice Kate (I836)

Alice L Furmedge’s death certificate has a number of discrepancies: her father’s name is given as George William Furmedge and her age (71 years) is slightly older than expected based on her date of birth. Other details given that match known information are: the informant is her brother F. G. Furmedge, living at 8, Grafton Street, Landport, Portsmouth and her address at time of death is 5, Rosetta Road (the address at which her sister Florence Kate Saunders is living in the 1939 Register). At the time of death Alice is a spinster of no occupation. | FURMEDGE, Alice Louisa (I118)

Alice, together with her three nieces (Alice Elise, Florence Mary & Josephine Rosalie Furmedge) emigrated to Canada in 1914 arriving by ship at Quebec before settling in Edmonton, British Columbia. | FURMEDGE, Alice Rosaline (I98)
|
42 |
Alice’s date of birth is recorded in her baptism record and the 1939 Register as 18 January 1905, however in the GRO Death Index it is recorded as 24 January 1905. | BUTTERWORTH, Alice (I255)
|
43 |
Alice’s death is reported in the Melton Mowbray Times published 10th August 1888, however the article implies that her death occurred 7th August whilst the parish register records her burial as 9th July. Whilst a death date of 7th July has been assumed, it is possible that the date of her burial is incorrectly recorded instead (the burials in the parish register on either side of the entry for Alice are in June and late August).
Alice was the daughter of Jonathan Oliff, who was the schoolmaster at Harby (1881 England Census: Class: RG11, Piece: 3184, Folio: 94, Page: 7). The family originated from Kent. | OLIFF, Alice Lizzie (I581)

Alice’s surname is recorded as Upton in the GRO Marriage Index entry for her marriage to Henry William Furmidge. She had previously married George Henry Upton in 1887. | BOOKER, Alice (I846)
