509	Mary Ann is a widow at the time of her marriage to Albert Victor Furmage in 1919; her name is recorded as Mary Ann DYER in the GRO Marriage Index. The parish marriage register records her as the daughter of Nicholas HAMILTON, deceased, corn chandler. In the 1911 England census she is recorded as the wife of Joseph Dyer, a builder’s carman; he was born about 1883 in Belfast, Ireland and Mary was born about 1881 in Dublin, Ireland. They are resident at 170 Stanhope Street, St Pancras, London (Class: RG14, Piece: 663, Schedule: 206). The column recording the number of years married is blank; no marriage record has been located for them to date in Ireland or England. Joseph enlisted as a Rifleman in the King’s Royal Rifle Corps (13th battalion) and was killed in action on 24 December 1916 in France & Flanders. His burial registration and headstone entries record him as the son of John Dyer and Mary McCann and as the husband of the late Mary Ann Dyer; his next of kin is recorded as Mrs N. [sic.] Furmage, 54A Redhill Street, Regents Park London. This is the same address recorded for Albert and Mary Furmage in, for example, the 1926 Electoral Register. A birth record has not been located for a Mary (Ann) Hamilton born in Dublin between 1878 and 1882 with a father Nicholas Hamilton (birth records accessed through Irish.genealogy.ie). A baptism record has been located for a Mary Anne Hamilton born 21 July 1873, baptised 25 July 1873, daughter of Nicholas Hamilton & Mary McCann who were resident at 33, Bolton Street, the baptism taking place at St Michan’s, Dublin City (Catholic Parish Registers at the NLI). In the 1921 England census Mary Furmage’s place of birth is recorded as “Bolton Street, Dublin” (Class: RG15, Piece: 705, Schedule: 176). This is a tentative connection given that this much earlier year of birth is not supported by later records. A Nicholas and Mary Hamilton can be traced in the 1901 Ireland census to House 5.4 in Lower Dominick Street, Rotunda, Dublin; Nicholas’ occupation is recorded as chandler. By the 1911 Ireland census Mary is a widow (House 52.4 in Lower Dominick Street, Rotunda, Dublin). Nicholas’ occupation and the timing of his death are consistent with the information in Mary’s 1919 parish marriage record.	HAMILTON, Mary Ann (I1413)

512	Mary Ann’s surname is recorded as Furmidge in the GRO Birth Index; her mother’s maiden name is recorded as Hayward. Mary Ann’s surname is recorded as Farmidge and her mother’s given name as “Mary Ann” in the Bishops’ Transcript of her baptism record. Mary A Furmidge (and her son George E Furmidge) are boarders with the Dyer family in the 1871 England census; the household includes William J Dyer, a single man aged 25 (born about 1847, Ryde, Isle of Wight), French Polisher (South Street, Ryde, Isle of Wight, Class: RG10, Piece: 1165, Folio: 123, Page: 32). By 1881, William J Dyer and Mary Ann are (allegedly) married with four children (12 Prince Street, Ryde, Isle of Wight, Class: RG11, Piece: 1178, Folio: 114, Page: 23). The eldest child, Edward Dyer was born about 1867 suggesting that this is likely to be the George E Furmidge recorded in the 1871 census. The next eldest child was born in 1874. No marriage record has been located for William J and Mary Ann; it has been assumed that they married some time between the 1871 census (when both are recorded as single) and 1874 when the second eldest child was born. Of the four children born to William J and Mary A Dyer, the GRO Birth Index records Furmedge as the mother’s maiden-name for two (William Dyer, b. 1874 & Ellen Louisa Dyer, b. 1877) and Furmidge for two (Ernest Charles Dyer b. 1880 & George Dyer b. 1884). 514	Mary Culverwell is believed to be the daughter of Adam and Prudence Culverwell. Her father, Adam, died about 1804 and in his will, proved 19 May 1804, he names Mary Furmage (exact spelling “ffurmage”) amongst his daughters (PROB 11/1408/275, The National Archives). A potential burial record for Mary also spells her surname “Furmage”. It records that she died at Musbury, Devon aged 56 years. Whilst there is no direct evidence confirming that the Mary Furmage buried 1820 is also the Mary Furmidge, wife of John Furmidge, this is the most likely record for her burial in Musbury, Devon. She appears to have formed a relationship with Leonard Howard Maddick after his separation from his wife in about 1925. His divorce was not granted until 1938 and he died in 1939. There is no evidence of a marriage between Mary Elizabeth and Leonard Howard however in later records (e.g., electoral rolls, death index and grave) she is recorded as Mary Elizabeth Maddick (or Maddicks). 522	Mary’s age and place of birth is consistently recorded in her parish marriage record (age only) and the England census for 1891, 1901 and 1911 (age and place of birth), giving her an approximate year of birth of 1853-54 and place of birth of Ampthill, Bedfordshire. In the parish marriage register her father is recorded as Samuel Bunker, labourer and one of the witnesses was a Harriett Bunker. The 1891 England census also records a niece, Annie Bunker, born about 1878-9 in Holloway, London (Furmage household, Kingsgate Cottages, 1 Shoot Upper Hill, Hampstead, London, Class: RG12, Piece: 111, Folio: 39, Page: 10 and Folio: 40, Page 11). Research using the information above concluded that Mary Bunker was in fact born in 1846 (not 1853-54) at Ampthill, Bedfordshire to Samuel Bunker and Mary Mead. This family has a daughter Harriett Bunker, born in 1850 (to Samuel Bunker and his second wife Caroline Mead). An Annie Bunker, born 1878-9 in Holloway/London, is also present in this family as a granddaughter in the 1881 England census (Class: RG11, Piece: 1634, Folio: 83, Page: 27) and as a niece in the 1901 England census (Class: RG13, Piece: 1515, Folio: 95, Page: 11). The only candidate for a Mary Bunker born 1853-54 in the Ampthill registration district was born at Steppingley, Bedfordshire to Samuel & Hannah Bunker and can be traced in the England census as a single woman from 1881 onwards (the period when George Furmage and Mary Bunker were married) and can thus be excluded. She had previously married Eli Clark in 1932 (GRO Marriage Index, Oct-Dec 1932, District: Bristol, Gloucestershire, Volume: 6A, Page: 37). The 1939 Register records her with her first husband Eli Clark, however the register has later been updated with her new surname of Furmage. 550	No entry for Richard in the GRO Birth Index has been identified to date. Richard was an assistant guard employed by the South Western Railway Company. He died whilst working as the rear guard on a late night train in the area of Twickenham and New Hampton, Surrey. At an inquest, his death was deemed accidental and it was concluded that he had been looking out of the train for a signal when he had been struck by a scaffold pole, at a bridge that was under repair, and subsequently drawn through the window of the train. A subscription was opened at Twickenham Station to raise money for his widow.
