- A William Sandy married Alice Maud Furmidge in 1893 at the Register Office, Medway, Kent. He is recorded as 22 years old (born 1870-71) and a bachelor. His occupation is Stoker, Royal Navy and his father is William Henry Sandy, a labourer. His residence is River Street, Brompton which was in the Chatham area near the Royal Navy docks.
William’s Royal Navy service record gives his date and place of birth as 13 June 1871, Rotherhithe, London. This is consistent with his age as recorded on his marriage record. Rotherhithe (London / Surrey) was in the St Olave (Southwark / Bermondsey) registration district from 1870. William joined the Royal Navy as a stoker in 17 October 1892. He was invalided due to an “old injury to his right hand” between 03 July 1896 and 07 Oct 1899 and ended his service on 09 August 1901.
Alice Maud Sandy (formerly Furmidge) died in 1905 on the Isle of Wight. In 1906, a William Boyd Sandy married Rosey Ellen Furmidge at the Register Office in Portsmouth, Hampshire. He is recorded as 32 years old (born 1873-74) and a widower. His occupation is Mariner (Merchant Service) and his residence (the same as Rosey’s) is at 14, Eastfield Road, Eastney. His father is recorded as William Henry Sandy (deceased), an army pensioner.
His Merchant Service Identity Certificate (C.R. 10 Form; The National Archives: BT350) gives his date and place of birth as 13 June 1874, London (this is further clarified as Bermondsey, London in the 1911 England census (Cross Street, Cowes, Isle of Wight. Class: RG14, Piece: 5689, Schedule: 52)). In 1907 he is recorded as the master of ’Surprise’ (former master: J. Furmidge) and he appears on other merchant navy crew lists (Crew List Index Project (CLIP) website). The 1921 England census shows him as engineer on board the ‘Media Hyr’ at anchor on the Hamble River, Southampton (Class: RG15, Piece: 05687).
An entry in the GRO Birth Index has not been found for a William BOYD Sandy born 1870 to 1875 anywhere in England, nor has a first marriage been identified for William BOYD Sandy. Based on the information above it seems likely that William Sandy, widower of Alice Maud Furmidge, and William Boyd Sandy, widowed groom of Rosey Ellen Furmidge are the same person. Both dates of birth have been cited as a GRO Birth Index entry has not been identified for either.
An inquest was held at the Congregational Schoolroom, Cowes into the death of William Boyd Sandy, age 70. He suffered a crushed chest when he was accidentally run down by a train from which he was alighting at Cowes Bay Station on 7th October 1944 (Isle of Wight Family History Society transcript).
