The entry for Arthur Thomas in the 1939 Register (in which Edith Mary is also present) records his date of birth as 05 December 1885. He is recorded in the 1921 Wales Census as being born in Newton Nottage, a parish near Porthcawl. He is also recorded in his 1917 marriage certificate as a 31 year old bachelor, a Sapper in the Royal Engineers but normally a Coal Miner, resident at Sycamore Cottage, Newton, Porthcawl, the son of Evan Thomas, a gardener.

The 1911 Wales Census for Sycamore Cottage, Newton, Porthcawl records Evan Thomas, his wife Elizabeth, and several adult children including Arthur Thomas, aged 26 years, a haulier (Class: RG14, Piece: 32584, Schedule: 47). Tracing the children of Evan and Elizabeth in the GRO Birth Index and parish baptism records draws the conclusion that Arthur was actually born 09 November 1884 at Newton Nottage.
