Notes

The 1939 Register records Ernest James’ (also known as James Ernest) date of birth as 26 Sep 1896 however evidence from a number of other sources confirms that he was born 26 Sep 1895.

In 1916 he is one of several men sworn in as special constables for B division at Bristol Police Court; the report notes that this was a condition of their exemption from Army service (Bristol Times and Mirror, published 22 July 1916, page: 5 Local War Items). He does, however, appear to have subsequently joined the Royal Navy, serving from 17 July 1917 until demobilisation on 03 Mar 1919 (The National Archives: ADM 188/795/74469).
