| Notes |
- Joseph Henry Furmage enrolled in the Royal Naval Reserve (RNR) on 28 May 1915. He was transferred to the Royal Navy on 26 November 1915 however wasn’t accepted and returned to the RNR on 27 December 1915 (The National Archives: BT 377/7/89646). By 1918 he was a Seaman (Recruit) in the merchant service (The National Archives: BT350).
In the 1921 England census, Joseph Henry is located at the Old Royal Horse Artillery Barracks, in St Peter’s parish, Dorchester, Dorset. He was by then a Private in the Dorsetshire Regiment, Royal Defence Corps (Class: RG15, Piece: 10262, Schedule: 3). On 01 July 1921, he and two other men were charged with arson, having set fire to the barracks causing damage of £7,000 and destruction of stores worth £20,000. The three men were all convicted and sentenced to three years penal servitude (Western Gazette, published 28 October 1921; After-trial calendars of prisoners tried at the assizes and quarter sessions, The National Archives, Reference: HO140/364).
This was not the first time Joseph had been in trouble. For instance, he was brought before the children’s court (petty sessions) in 1910 charged, along with four other schoolboys, with stealing a quantity of bananas; the parents were ordered to pay 3 shillings costs each (Dorset County Chronicle, published 22 September 1910). In 1912, he was before the children’s court again, along with four other boys, charged with wilful damage to a house being built in Ringwood Road, to which they pleaded guilty and were fined (Southern Times & Dorset County Herald, 12 October 1912). A charge of larceny was also brought against him in 1913 (The National Archives, Reference: HO140/364). As a result of his multiple misdemeanours, Joseph was entered into the Habitual Criminal Register (The National Archives, MEPO 6/36).
At the time of his going to prison in 1921 he had a wife and two very small children. Following his release on 17 January 1924 he appears to have settled down, going on to have a further ten children born between 1924 and 1942.
In 1964, Joseph, then a widower, re-married. He gives his occupation as Docks Stevedore (retired).
