    • James Bassett enrolled with the 4th (Queen’s Own) Hussars on 26 August 1895, aged 18 years and 6 months. He served until 29 Jun 1899 when he was discharged as medically unfit for further service. His next of kin is listed as his mother Catherine Bassett of Lisson Grove, Marylebone, Middlesex (The National Archives: WO 97 / 2266/122). In September 1914, he enrolled in the Royal Air Force and served in France; he was discharged in 1920. Once again his next of kin is listed as his mother, Catherine Bassett of Lisson Grove and not his wife, Amy Julia (The National Archives: AIR 79/1146).
