- The details of John’s father (name and occupation) have not been recorded in his parish marriage record suggesting that he was illegitimate. The England Census (1891 to 1921) records his age giving a year of birth of between 1852 and 1859; excluding the 1911 census his year of birth is 1856 to 1859 and this is consistent with his age at death (GRO Death Index). He is consistently recorded as born in Portsmouth, Hampshire in the England Census (1891 to 1921); his occupation of painter / decorator / paper hanger is also consistent.
The closest birth record for a John Furmage (exact surname) is for John Harry Furmage born in 1859, Portsmouth. His birth certificate does not record a father; the mother is recorded as Jane Caroline Furmage, of 29, Grosvenor Street, Southsea, which is consistent with this being the daughter of Robert Furmage and Mary Ann Cummins. Robert and his family are living at 29, Grosvenor Street as recorded in the 1861 England census with both Robert’s daughter Jane Caroline, and a grandson John Henry Furmage, age 1 (Class: RG9, Piece: 642, Folio: 117, Page: 4). Jane Caroline marries in 1862 and her son John Harry (or John Henry) is not resident with her in any subsequent census and there is no evidence that he died as an infant or young child. A William J Furmage, aged 11 and born in Portsmouth is recorded with grandfather Robert Furmage in the 1871 England census (Alfred Street, Aldershot, Hampshire: RG10, Piece: 816, Folio: 87, Page: 13). A John Furmage, aged 23 and born in Portsmouth is recorded as the nephew of Elizabeth Stunell (Jane Caroline’s elder sister) in the 1881 England census (Henry Terrace, Bensham Grove, Croydon, Surrey: Class: RG11, Piece: 121; Page: 41). Of interest, he is recorded as a painter and this also places him in Surrey. Based on this evidence it is suggested that John Furmage, husband of Carry/Carrie Allison, and John Harry/Henry Furmage, son of Jane Caroline Furmage, are the same person.
