| Notes |
- Robert Furmage was a soldier in the First Regiment of Life Guards, a cavalry regiment, based in London and Windsor; he is recorded as a soldier in his eldest child’s 1835 baptism register entry but exactly when he joined is not known. By 1843 he appears to have transferred to the Coast Guard service based at Priory Station, Hastings, Sussex. He served there from 10 January 1843 until 30 July 1846 when he removed to Camber Station, East Sussex (Coast Guard Establishment Books, The National Archives, ADM 175/6 & 175/7). By 1850 he appears to have left the Coast Guards and moved to Parkstone in Dorset where he is employed as a drilling master (1851 England census, Class: HO107, Piece: 1855, Folio: 114, Page: 3). In August 1852, his name is recorded in the Globe newspaper as an insolvent petitioner (published 25 August 1852, page 1). In later census returns (1861 onwards) he has moved again, this time to Hampshire, and is recorded as a dealer in marine stores and later as a general dealer.
