    • The “Furmage Family Memorial 2021” (Deloraine General Cemetery, Deloraine, Tasmania, Australia, accessed on www.findagrave.com) records that Richard Penny Furmage and his wife settled in Deloraine in 1892 where they established and ran the General Store and family business known as R.P. Furmage Pty. Ltd. Richard and Mary Ellen married in Tasmania in 1888. A passenger list recording when Richard first emigrated to Australia has not been found to date however the shipping arrivals published November 1887 record that a Mr R. Furmage arrived in Australia on a ship that had originated in England on 02 November 1887 (whether this was his first arrival in Australia or from a subsequent journey is not known).

      Richard Penny Furmage is believed to have died of “Spanish ‘flu” which he contracted whilst on a business trip to Melbourne. Based on contemporary sources it appears that he had been ill in Melbourne for several days when, against medical advice, he decided to join his ship, the Wainui, for the return journey to Tasmania. On arrival at [the Point Nepean Quarantine Station in] Portsea, [Victoria, Australia] he was quarantined and later died. The other passengers were given inhalation treatment and monitored and no other deaths occurred (details taken from the article entitled The Furmage Mystery, published in the Advocate, 13 February 1919). The Point Nepean Quarantine Station (also referred to as the Victoria Quarantine Station), quarantined around 12,000 passengers between November 1918 and August 1919 during the Spanish ‘flu pandemic.
