- A death record has not been identified for Eric Walter Furmage. The last record referring to him is from 1966.
Eric Walter Furmage was a ship’s steward, employed in the merchant services. He is recorded as such in the 1921 England census and there are also a number of standard merchant seamen records available for him dated from about 1918 to about 1923. In 1924 and into the 1930’s records describe him as a motor or coach driver. In August 1924, he pleaded guilty at the Old Bailey (Central Criminal Court, London) to a change of stealing 14 tons of coal and receiving 9 tons of stolen coal. Judgement of his case was placed ‘on hold’ (“judgement respited”). In 1930 and 1933, he appears in newspaper articles concerning his separation from his first wife, Emily Mary. They had first separated in 1928, Emily Mary having had an affair. Eric had returned to his wife but they separated again in 1930 and by 1933 both parties had formed new relationships. In both articles Emily Mary had taken Eric to court; in 1930 for desertion and in 1933 for neglecting to pay reasonable maintenance for their child. In both instances, the case was dismissed. Based on bankruptcy notices published in The London Gazette between January 1959 and May 1966, Eric later became a hotelier. The notices give his addresses as (1) 68, Parkview Road, Welling, Kent, moving to (2) Greenways Hotel, Egham Hill, Egham, Surrey, moving to (3) Ildene, Horton Cross, Ilminster, Somerset. From 1960 to 1966, he is recorded as unemployed and living at “Greenhill”, Lower Sandhurst Road, Crowthorne, Berkshire. These are the last records found for him.
