• Notes

  Rose’s birth certificate records her parents as William Furmage and Mary Ann Furmage (formerly Barlow). The birth was registered by her mother. Rose’s baptism register entry however does not record a father; her mother is recorded as Mary Ann Furmage. Both sources, as well as Rose’s parish burial entry, record her address as 4, Anerley Street, Battersea which is also the address recorded for both Mary Ann Furmage, spinster, and George Gardner, bachelor, on their parish marriage record, the marriage occurring at the same church at which Rose was baptised. A marriage between a William Furmage and a Mary Ann Barlow has not been identified. Barlow was Mary Ann Furmage’s mother’s maiden name and it seems possible that Mary Ann has used it as her own when registering her illegitimate daughter’s birth. Note: Rose’s surname is recorded as Firmage in the GRO Death Index and in her burial register entries - it has actually been corrected from Furmage to Firmage in the latter.
