  • Notes
    • An entry in the GRO Birth Index has not been identified for Bernard Furmedge (or similar variants). His date of birth is recorded in his baptism record.

He joined the merchant navy in about 1923 and was engaged on several ships in-between 1924 and 1926. His card shows that he had been inactive for at least 5 years prior to 1932 (Register of Seamen, BT 349 / CR1 & BT 348 / CR2, The National Archives; accessed on www.findmypast.co.uk). He also appears on New York City Passenger Lists for 1924 (transcripts accessed on www.findmypast.co.uk): although he is recorded as a passenger (the lists also include crew), some of the ship’s names tally with those recorded on his merchant navy card. Except for one passenger list, the departure port is given as Hamburg (the exception is Greenock), travelling to New York via e.g., Southampton, Cherbourg, Quebec/Bermuda/Halifax. Only the year (1924) is recorded on these transcripts, not the exact dates and there appears to be some duplicatory transcripts (New York City Passenger Lists, 1820-1957: Reference: NARA: M237 & T715).

No death record has been identified for Bernard however his father’s obituary notice in the Liverpool Echo names his living children and Bernard is not listed. It has therefore been assumed that he died prior to 1951.
