    • Stephen’s surname is recorded as Furmedge in the GRO Birth Index, his mother’s maiden name as Crumby. In the baptism register Stephen’s surname appears as Furmige and his mother’s maiden name as Crummy. His date of birth is recorded as 19 January 1881 in his baptism record but as 30 January 1880 in the Register of Seamen, Special Index (BT350, The National Archives) and as 31 January 1880 in the 1939 Register (8 House, Silvester Street, Liverpool: RG101-4324C). Since his birth was registered in the Jan-Mar quarter of 1881 it is unlikely that he was born in January 1880. His birth certificate confirms that he was born 30th January 1881.
