• Notes

  Lyne’s Royal Navy Service Record gives his date of birth as 1st (not 11th) November 1872. It also appears to state that his parents were John and Elizabeth (not John and Ann). Other details support that this is the correct record for Lyne Furmidge son of John Furmidge and Ann Hardwick. He enrolled on 2nd June 1915 and served until demobbed on 24th January 1919. The 1921 England census records that Lyne and Jane had an adopted son, born about 1919, whose parents had died; his first name has been over-written and can’t be deciphered (Class: RG15, Piece: 24052, Schedule: 318). Otherwise there is no evidence that Lyne and Jane had children of their own. A great nephew, James Rymer, is recorded on the 1939 Register with Lyne and Jane however his year of birth is recorded as 1921, making it unlikely that this is the adopted child in the 1921 census. James Rymer is also recorded as the informant on Jane Furmidge’s death certificate.
