  • Notes
    • Charles William Pain’s father was in military service in Scotland and Charles was subsequently born in Edinburgh however his family were natives of the Isle of Wight and he can be found there with his grandparents in the 1901 and 1911 England census (Class: RG13, Piece: 1025, Folio: 85, Page: 21 & Class: RG14, Piece: 5725, Schedule: 332). He served with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders during the First World War and was taken prisoner during the Battle of Le Cateau on 26th August 1914; it is unclear exactly when he was released. A baptism record for their daughter places Charles and his wife Dorothy in India in early 1921, Charles is described as a Lance Corporal in the 1st Battalion Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders (Reference: N-3-125/85/5, British India Office (Presidency of Bombay) Parish Register, Families in British India Society (FIBIS), accessed on www.findmypast.co.uk). He took a commission with the Indian Army Ordinance Corps on 12 Aug 1922 and served with them until 1948 (Number OS 100, Indian Army Records of Service, IOR/L/MIL/14/50019, The National Archives). The newspaper announcement of Charles and Dorothy’s silver wedding anniversary in 1944 notes that they are currently resident at Shahjahanpur, India (Andrews Newspaper Index Cards). Both Charles and Dorothy died in their native Isle of Wight.
