    • Alice Kate is enumerated at St Andrew’s Home for Girls, St Simon’s Road, Southsea in the 1911 England census, aged 14 years (Class: RG14, Piece: 5554, Schedule: 359). This children’s home was transferred to The Waifs and Strays’ Society in 1908 and moved from Victoria Road to St Simon’s Road, Southsea, in 1911. It accommodated girls aged 7 to 14 years who were taught domestic skills which at 14 years old included cooking and laundry. The home had an ‘excellent reputation for producing happy and fun-loving girls’ (information accessed on Hidden Lives Revealed, https://www.hiddenlives.org.uk/homes/, 02 May 2025). By 1921, Alice appears to be in domestic service in Hull, Yorkshire (Class: RG15, Piece: 23744, Schedule: 203) and by 1939 she is a working as a maid and living in Bournemouth (Class: RG101, Piece: 2229A). Her date of birth is recorded as 11 Dec 1897 (not 1896) in the 1939 Register however her birth certificate confirms the year as 1896.
